Verdict:Leave OneDrive if Windows keeps pushing files into it without you asking, or if you want files outside Microsoft's cloud. OneDrive is built into Windows and tied to Microsoft 365, which is its biggest advantage and the reason people feel locked in. Check Microsoft's plan page for free storage and plan prices before moving. Nextcloud is the broadest self-hosted replacement and is free to run, with desktop and mobile apps. Seafile is the choice when raw sync speed matters, and its Professional edition is free for up to three users. Syncthing needs no server at all, but it moves files between your own devices rather than storing them in a cloud you can open from any browser. Google Drive and Proton Drive are hosted options: Google gives 15 GB shared with Gmail, and Proton gives up to 5 GB of Drive with encryption. Dropbox has the most mature cross-platform sync, but only 2 GB free. The trade-off is Office. If you open Word and Excel files directly from OneDrive links, you will lose that integration with most of these. Plan to move folders in batches and keep a copy until sync settles.
