Good fit if

  • You are on Windows and want every capture mode (ShareX is the pick)
  • You only need clean annotated screenshots (Greenshot is the pick)
  • You use Linux or switch between systems (Flameshot is the pick)
  • You need a shareable video link (Cap is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

Screen capture can mean two things, a still screenshot or a recording, and most free tools do one of them well. For screenshots, Greenshot and Flameshot are small and quick: you grab a region, annotate it, and save or copy it. ShareX is the Windows power tool that does screenshots, scrolling capture, GIF recording and automatic uploads, but its menus are dense. If you also need video, OBS Studio, Cap and Screenity record the screen, with Cap and Screenity aimed at quick shareable recordings and OBS aimed at full control. Zight combines screenshots, recordings and sharing links, though its free plan limits recordings to 5 minutes and 720p. Match the tool to your platform first: Greenshot, ShareX and MPC-style Windows tools are Windows-only, Flameshot runs on Linux, Windows and macOS, and Screenity lives in Chrome. Then decide whether you need annotation, a shareable link, or a local file only. For documentation work, a tool with arrows, blur and numbering saves more time than extra recording features. For support tickets, a link that opens in a browser is better than a file attachment.
