Gantt charts are free in two shapes: desktop schedulers and hosted tools with a capped free plan. GanttProject is a free desktop app that runs offline and reads and writes Microsoft Project files, which makes it the quickest path for a one-person plan. ProjectLibre is described as a free desktop replacement for Microsoft Project. OpenProject, with a Community edition under GPL-3.0, shows work packages on a timeline with dependencies, though the Gantt PDF export is an Enterprise add-on. Redmine, also self-hosted, has a built-in Gantt chart and calendar. TeamGantt gives a hosted Gantt on a free plan limited to one user, one project and 40 tasks. Plane has a free plan for up to 12 users, with dependencies in the timeline limited to paid plans. ClickUp lists Gantt as a trial only on its free plan. The trade-off is collaboration against cost. Desktop tools are free and private, but sharing means exporting a file. Hosted tools let a team update the plan together, but the free tier stops at a tiny task or user count. If your schedule has more than a few dozen tasks and several people, self-hosting OpenProject or Redmine is the most generous free route, at the cost of running a server.
