Good fit if

  • You upload website files over SFTP (FileZilla is the pick)
  • You manage Windows servers (WinSCP is the pick)
  • You move photos between phone and laptop (LocalSend is the pick)
  • You back up to cloud buckets on a schedule (rclone is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

File transfer covers three different jobs, and the right free tool depends on which one you have. To move files to a web server, an FTP or SFTP client is the answer: FileZilla (free client, Pro from 12.99 EUR a year), WinSCP for Windows, and Cyberduck for macOS and Windows all connect over FTP, FTPS or SFTP, and Cyberduck also speaks S3 and cloud services. To copy files between your own devices, LocalSend sends directly over your local network with no internet and no account, and Syncthing keeps folders in sync between computers without a central server. To move data to and from cloud storage on a schedule, rclone does the job from the command line. To send a file to another person, WeTransfer's free plan gives 3 GB and 10 transfers in a rolling 30 days. The trade-off is convenience against control. Graphical clients are easier to learn, while rclone and Syncthing handle automation better but expect you to read documentation. Check which protocols your server offers first: plain FTP sends passwords unencrypted, so prefer SFTP wherever it is available. For everyday sending between your own phone and laptop, LocalSend is usually the quickest to try.
