Verdict:FileZilla is free under the GPL for commercial and private use, so the usual reasons to replace it are practical rather than price. Some people dislike the bundled-offer reputation of third-party installers, some need cloud storage support that FileZilla only provides in Pro (starting at 12.99 EUR per year for one device), and some want a client that feels native on their operating system. On Windows, WinSCP is the strongest choice: it supports SFTP, SCP, FTPS and S3, has scripting, and is free. On a Mac, Cyberduck is free and covers many cloud services, while Transmit is a paid $45 option with a more polished interface. If you work mostly over SSH, termscp keeps transfers in the terminal and runs on Linux and BSD too. Rclone is a different kind of tool; it is best when you want repeatable syncs to cloud storage, not manual drag and drop. What you lose by leaving is FileZilla's cross-platform consistency, so a mixed Windows, Mac and Linux team may be better staying put. Download from each project's official site, compare the transfer queue behavior on a large folder, and keep your saved site list exported before uninstalling.

Good fit if

  • You are on Windows and want scripting (WinSCP is the pick)
  • You are on a Mac and want a free GUI (Cyberduck is the pick)
  • You want to sync to cloud buckets from scripts (rclone is the pick)
  • You mostly work in a terminal over SSH (termscp is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on FileZilla features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

FileZilla today: Free (Free client under the GPL; commercial use allowed); paid from EUR 12.99 per year, FileZilla Pro single device (FileZilla pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for FileZilla alternatives

FileZilla's cloud storage support is a Pro feature: FileZilla Pro adds services such as Amazon S3, Google Drive, OneDrive, Azure, Box and Backblaze B2 to FTP, FTPS and SFTP. It costs 12.99 EUR a year for one device or 29.99 EUR for up to 3 devices. The free command-line client supports FTP, FTPS and SFTP only, and cloud integration there also needs the Pro CLI, which is Windows-only.

WinSCP

Compared with FileZilla: GPL-3.0 and Windows-only, with FTP, FTPS, SCP, SFTP, WebDAV and S3 plus scripting. It lacks FileZilla's macOS and Linux builds but has a better synchronization and automation feature set for Windows users.

Price: Free (Free) (WinSCP pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows. GPL-3.0 (open source).

Project activity: 3.9k GitHub stars · last commit Oct 26, 2026

Best for: Windows users who script transfers.

Worth knowing: Supports FTP, FTPS, SCP, SFTP, WebDAV and S3 with scripting and an integrated text editor. Windows only.

Cyberduck

Compared with FileZilla: GPL client for macOS and Windows that supports many cloud services such as S3, Dropbox and OneDrive out of the box. You lose FileZilla's Linux build, but you gain native cloud integrations that FileZilla reserves for Pro.

Price: Free (Free open source client; donations requested) (Cyberduck pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: macOS, Windows. GPL-3.0 (open source).

Project activity: 4.9k GitHub stars · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Cloud storage and SFTP on Mac.

Worth knowing: Covers FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, SMB, S3, Azure, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and more. Mountain Duck, for mounting remote storage as a disk, is a separate product.

rclone

Compared with FileZilla: MIT command-line tool covering over 70 cloud storage products and can mount them as disks. It has no polished GUI like FileZilla, and its web interface is experimental, but it is better for syncing and automation.

Price: Free (Free open source software) (rclone pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 60.6k GitHub stars · latest release v1.75.2 (Oct 9, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Scripted syncs and cloud storage.

Worth knowing: Command-line tool for over 70 cloud storage products; can mount storage as a disk and serve over SFTP, HTTP, WebDAV and FTP. Web GUI is experimental.

termscp

Compared with FileZilla: MIT terminal client for SCP, SFTP, FTP/S, S3, Kube, SMB and WebDAV on Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD. It replaces FileZilla's windows with a text interface, which suits servers and SSH sessions.

Price: Free (Free open source software) (termscp pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux, BSD. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 3.1k GitHub stars · latest release v1.2.1 (Oct 19, 2026) · last commit Oct 19, 2026

Best for: Transfers inside a terminal.

Worth knowing: Terminal UI client for SCP, SFTP, FTP/S, S3, Kube, SMB and WebDAV.

Transmit

Compared with FileZilla: macOS-only, $45 one-time with a 7-day trial. Unlike free FileZilla it costs money, but the interface is native, polished and covers S3, Backblaze B2, Dropbox and more.

Price: Paid from $45 per one-time per copy (Transmit pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: macOS. Proprietary.

Best for: Mac users who want a native app.

Worth knowing: Requires macOS 13.0 or later. The download is the full version for 7 days, then needs an unlock code.

Total Commander

Compared with FileZilla: A Windows file manager with a built-in FTP client that supports FTPS. It is shareware: 30-day trial, then EUR 42 plus VAT for a license key. The page does not mention SFTP, which FileZilla's free client covers.

Price: Paid from EUR 42 per one-time license key, plus VAT where applicable (Total Commander pricing, checked 2026-10-25).

Which one to pick
