Verdict:Leave Docker Desktop if your company is past the free-use line or you only need containers on your own machine. Docker's pricing page lists Personal as free for individual developers, Pro at $9 per user per month billed annually, Team at $15 and Business at $24. Check Docker's terms for the company-size and revenue conditions on free use before you decide for a team. On a Mac working alone, OrbStack's free plan covers personal, non-commercial containers and Linux machines, and commercial use needs its $8 per user per month Pro plan. If you live in a terminal, Colima is MIT-licensed and free, with no GUI. For a company that cannot pay per seat, Podman Desktop and Rancher Desktop are both open source under Apache-2.0 and offer a desktop app. The real trade-off is compatibility. Docker Desktop bundles the Docker Hub and Scout workflows and the Docker Engine behaviour many compose files and CI scripts assume. Run your docker-compose project and CI jobs on the replacement before you remove Docker Desktop from a team's machines.

Good fit if

  • A company needs a free runtime and cannot pay per seat (Podman Desktop is the pick)
  • You are a solo developer on macOS who wants containers and Linux machines (OrbStack is the pick)
  • You work from the terminal and want a scriptable runtime with no GUI (Colima is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Docker Desktop features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Docker Desktop today: Free (Personal (individual developers): 1 user, 1 private Docker Hub repo, 100 Docker Hub pulls per hour under reasonable use, 1 Docker Scout-enabled repo); paid from $9 per user/month, billed annually (Pro) (Docker Desktop pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Why people look for Docker Desktop alternatives

Docker Desktop is free without a subscription only for non-commercial open source projects, or for commercial use at companies with fewer than 250 employees and under $10 million in annual revenue. Government entities must buy a subscription. Above those lines, Pro is $9 per user a month annually and single-user only, Team $15, and Business $24. The free Personal plan also caps Docker Hub pulls at 100 an hour.
