Verdict:Leave VirtualBox if your work depends on a specific host platform or a cleaner VM manager. VirtualBox is GPL-3.0 for the base package, but its Extension Pack is free only for personal and educational use, and commercial use needs an Oracle licence, so check that before you rely on USB or RDP features in a company. Hyper-V is the lowest-cost choice for Windows users who already have Windows Pro or Enterprise, since it ships with the OS. VMware's Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro are free to download, which suits Windows and Mac users who want a graphical manager and do not need open source. UTM is Apache-2.0 and free to download on macOS, but it covers only Apple hosts. QEMU is GPL-2.0 and runs on most hosts, but it has no graphical manager by default, so it suits scripted setups. Lima suits Linux guests and container work on a Mac. The trade-off is host coverage against the GUI. Each free option narrows where your VMs can run, so move one test VM before you migrate a whole library.

Good fit if

  • You use Windows Pro or Enterprise and want no extra install (Hyper-V is the pick)
  • You are on an Apple Silicon Mac and want a free VM app (UTM is the pick)
  • You script VMs and do not need a GUI (QEMU is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on VirtualBox features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

VirtualBox today: Free (Extension Pack is free for personal and educational use only) (VirtualBox pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for VirtualBox alternatives

VirtualBox itself is GPLv3, but the Extension Pack, which adds VRDP remote display, webcam passthrough, the Intel PXE boot ROM and AES disk image encryption, is licensed under the Personal Use and Educational License. That excludes commercial and organizational use. Business use needs an Oracle Enterprise license, and the named-user perpetual version is sold in quantities of at least 100. Oracle's licensing page also says the 30-day PUEL trial was discontinued.
