Verdict:Leave Unraid if you need a free system or want to avoid paying for a licence. Unraid is proprietary, and its pricing page lists a one-time Starter licence from $49 with six storage devices and one year of updates, Unleashed at $109 for unlimited devices and Lifetime at $249, all one-time. A 30-day free trial needs no credit card. The alternatives are free but solve a different job. TrueNAS is open source and built around ZFS, which suits people who put data integrity ahead of flexible disk sizes. OpenMediaVault is a light Debian-based file server that is easy to run on old hardware. CasaOS gives you an app launcher for self-hosted services on a home server. Proxmox VE is the choice when you run many VMs and want clustering, and it does not replace a disk array by itself. XigmaNAS suits people who want a BSD base. The trade-off is that Unraid mixes disk sizes in one array and lets you add disks later, a feature the free systems handle less easily. Test your disks and Docker workloads on a spare machine before you move your data.

Unraid today: Paid from $49 per one-time, Starter (6 storage devices, 1 year of updates) (Unraid pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Unraid is a paid license with no permanent free tier, only a 30-day trial. Starter costs $49 and covers 6 storage devices; more than that requires Unleashed at $109 (unlimited devices) or Lifetime at $249. Starter and Unleashed include one year of updates. After that you keep running your version, but new releases need a $36 per year extension, and the oldest supported minor version stops receiving security patches once a newer one becomes public. Lifetime avoids the extension fee.
