Verdict:Leave Cypress if your team wants a free test stack that runs on its own CI, or if the paid cloud features are more than you need. Cypress's pricing page lists a Starter plan that is free with 10 users, 500 test results and 100 prompt executions per month. Its Team plan is $67 per month billed annually at $799 per year, and the Cypress App is MIT-licensed. Playwright is Apache-2.0 and runs Chromium, Firefox and WebKit without a fee, and it is the most common choice for new suites. Selenium is also Apache-2.0 and suits teams already on WebDriver, but you assemble the runner and dashboard yourself. WebdriverIO and TestCafe are MIT-licensed JavaScript frameworks, and Puppeteer suits scripted browser tasks more than full test suites. The trade-off is the test runner. Cypress offers an interactive runner with time-travel debugging and a hosted dashboard, and the free alternatives trade that for flexibility and no vendor lock-in. Move a few critical specs first and measure how long they take to debug before you switch the whole suite.

Good fit if

  • You want new tests on a free, widely used framework (Playwright is the pick)
  • You already maintain WebDriver tests (Selenium is the pick)
  • You want a simple Node runner with no separate driver setup (TestCafe is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Cypress features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Cypress today: Free (Starter: 10 users, 500 test results per month, 100 prompt executions per month, 30-day data retention); paid from $67 per month, billed monthly (Team 'starting at $67'; $799 per year billed annually) (Cypress pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Why people look for Cypress alternatives

Cypress's test runner is open source, but the Cloud dashboard that tracks runs is metered. The free Starter plan allows 10 users and 500 test results a month with 30-day retention, and it cannot go over that limit. Flake detection, flaky test analytics, Jira issue creation, webhooks and SSO are not part of Starter. Team is $67 a month billed annually ($799 a year) with 120k test results a year; on-demand results are listed at $6 per 1,000.
