Verdict:Leave Selenium when most of your time goes into flaky waits, driver versions and grid maintenance rather than writing tests. Selenium itself costs nothing under Apache-2.0, so the expense is engineering hours, not a licence. The free alternatives keep the same zero licence cost but change what you maintain. Playwright is the usual move for cross-browser suites, because it covers Chromium, Firefox and WebKit from one library under Apache-2.0. Puppeteer, also Apache-2.0, is the better fit if your work is Chrome-only, such as scraping or generating screenshots. TestCafe under MIT suits a team that wants a JavaScript test runner with a shorter setup and does not need many browsers. Cypress is free on its Starter tier for 10 users and 500 test results a month, and its Team plan starts at $67 a month billed annually; pay for it only if the hosted dashboard matters to you. Katalon fits teams with manual testers who need a studio, but its free plan caps you at 40 static suites and the paid tier is priced per seat. The concrete trade-off is control against convenience: Selenium and its free peers leave the infrastructure to you, while the paid platforms take that work off your hands for a monthly bill. Stay on Selenium if you already run a grid and your suites cover older browsers that the newer tools do not target.

Selenium today: Free (Open source under Apache-2.0; no paid plan) (Selenium pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Selenium's plain element lookups do not wait by default, so a missing element fails immediately unless you configure waits. The docs warn against mixing implicit and explicit waits because it causes unpredictable wait times, and they name timing races between the browser and your code as a primary cause of flaky tests. You also run and maintain the grid and browsers yourself.
Compared with Selenium: Free and Apache-2.0 licensed like Selenium, with one library that drives Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. You trade Selenium's language bindings and WebDriver standard for a smaller, more opinionated API.
Price: Free (Open source under Apache-2.0; no paid plan) (Playwright pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Apache-2.0 (open source).
Project activity: 98.7k GitHub stars · latest release v1.64.1 (Oct 14, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Cross-browser end-to-end tests without a grid.
Worth knowing: Open-source browser automation library for Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Runs your own browsers and CI.
Compared with Selenium: Free under Apache-2.0 and built by the Chrome team. It only automates Chrome-family browsers, so you give up Selenium's cross-browser reach in exchange for a simpler Node API.
Price: Free (Open source under Apache-2.0; no paid plan) (Puppeteer pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Apache-2.0 (open source).
Project activity: 95.8k GitHub stars · latest release browsers-v3.2.6 (Oct 22, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Chrome-only automation and scraping.
Worth knowing: Open-source Node.js library that drives Chrome or Chromium over the DevTools protocol.
Compared with Selenium: Free and MIT licensed, a test runner that needs no separate WebDriver binaries. It covers fewer browsers and a smaller ecosystem than Selenium, but setup is shorter.
Price: Free (Open source under MIT; no paid plan) (TestCafe pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. MIT (open source).
