Verdict:Leave BrowserStack if you are paying for a cloud you mostly use to run automated tests that could run in your own CI. BrowserStack's lowest price we found was Freelancer Live at $12.50 a month, billed annually, with 100 minutes, so the cost grows once parallel runs and automation are added. Playwright is the strongest free replacement for automated checks: Apache-2.0, no paid plan, and it drives real browsers you install. Selenium suits teams that already have WebDriver suites. Both leave you owning the machines. If you need a hosted cloud, LambdaTest is the nearest swap and its free tiers let you test before paying. Cypress and WebdriverIO fit teams that live in JavaScript, while Katalon helps people who prefer recorded tests over code. The trade-off is real devices: none of the open-source tools give you BrowserStack's phones and older browser versions without a separate service. If your users are on a wide range of physical devices, keep a cloud for those checks. If your matrix is the latest few browsers, run Playwright in CI and stop paying for minutes you could generate yourself.

Good fit if

  • You want automated cross-browser tests with no vendor bill (Playwright is the pick)
  • You already have WebDriver tests (Selenium is the pick)
  • You need a hosted browser cloud (LambdaTest is the pick)
  • Your team writes JavaScript front-end tests (Cypress is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on BrowserStack features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

BrowserStack today: Paid from $12.5 per per month, billed annually (Freelancer Live, 100 minutes); $19 month-to-month (BrowserStack pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Why people look for BrowserStack alternatives

BrowserStack prices each product separately and scales by seat or parallel test. Live runs from $12.50 a month billed annually for the 100-minute Freelancer plan to $150 a month for Team, which starts at 5 users. Automate is priced per parallel test: $99 a month for desktop, $175 for desktop and mobile, $225 for the Pro tier, and each tier starts at one parallel. Annual billing saves up to 25%, and volume pricing needs a sales call. There is no permanent free plan, only a trial link, so teams running many tests in parallel see the bill grow quickly.

Playwright

Compared with BrowserStack: Open source under Apache-2.0 with no paid plan. It runs real browsers on your own machines or CI, but you lose BrowserStack's hosted real-device cloud and must manage the infrastructure.

Price: Free (Open source under Apache-2.0; no paid plan) (Playwright pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 98.7k GitHub stars · latest release v1.64.1 (Oct 14, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Automated cross-browser tests in CI.

Worth knowing: Open-source browser automation library for Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Runs your own browsers and CI.

Selenium

Compared with BrowserStack: Open source under Apache-2.0 and the long-standing standard for browser automation. You supply the browsers and grid yourself, unlike BrowserStack's ready-made cloud.

Price: Free (Open source under Apache-2.0; no paid plan) (Selenium pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 34.6k GitHub stars · latest release selenium-4.51.0 (Oct 9, 2026) · last commit Oct 28, 2026

Best for: Teams with existing WebDriver tests.

Worth knowing: Open-source browser automation framework. Self-hosted grid is free; you run the browsers yourself.

LambdaTest

Compared with BrowserStack: Has free tiers per product, including 100 automation minutes with 2 parallel tests, and Virtual Live from $15 a month annually. The closest hosted swap for BrowserStack's cloud.

Price: Free (Free Forever per product, e.g. Automation 100 minutes with 2 parallel tests; Live 2-minute sessions and 5 real-device sessions monthly; Smart UI 2,000 screenshots; Accessibility 25 scans); paid from $15 per per month, billed annually (Virtual Live) (LambdaTest pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Web (cloud browsers and real devices). Proprietary.

Best for: A hosted cloud with a free start.

Cypress

Compared with BrowserStack: Cypress has a free Starter plan and an MIT-licensed app per its pricing page. It tests in-browser rather than offering a device cloud, so real-device coverage is lost.

Price: Free (Starter: 10 users, 500 test results per month, 100 prompt executions per month, 30-day data retention); paid from $67 per month, billed monthly (Team 'starting at $67'; $799 per year billed annually) (Cypress pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Proprietary cloud service; Cypress App is MIT per pricing page.

Best for: Front-end teams testing web apps.

WebdriverIO

Compared with BrowserStack: MIT-licensed and free, running on WebDriver or the DevTools protocol. It replaces BrowserStack's automation side only; you need a grid or cloud for many browsers.

Price: Free (Open source under MIT; no paid plan) (WebdriverIO pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 9.9k GitHub stars · latest release v10.1.0 (Oct 18, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: JavaScript teams wanting flexibility.

Worth knowing: Open-source WebDriver-based test framework for Node.js.

Katalon Studio

Compared with BrowserStack: Free plan with up to 40 static test suites, then about $1,000 a seat per year on Professional. It adds record and playback that BrowserStack does not centre on.

Price: Free (Free plan: local test authoring, record and playback, local execution; 30-day trial of paid features); paid from $1000 per per seat per year, billed annually (Professional; page shows a promotional price from $2,199) (Katalon Studio pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Proprietary.

Best for: Teams wanting low-code testing.

Sauce Labs

Compared with BrowserStack: Cloud testing priced from $39 a month for Live Testing and $149 for Virtual Device Cloud on annual billing, against BrowserStack Automate at $99. More capacity beyond a few concurrent sessions needs a sales conversation.

Price: Paid from $39 per month, billed annually (Live Testing) (Sauce Labs pricing, checked 2026-10-25).
