Verdict:CodeSandbox is a browser IDE and cloud dev environment with a Free plan; check its pricing page for paid plans. If what you want is a place to try a front-end idea or share a public demo, StackBlitz is the closest free swap: the Personal plan covers unlimited public projects and GitHub repositories. If you need private team work, GitHub Codespaces is the sturdier route, since a GitHub Free account includes 120 compute hours and 15 GB-month of storage each month, billed at $0.18 per hour for a 2-core machine after that. Remember compute hours multiply with core count, so a 4-core machine burns the quota twice as fast. If you want to own the infrastructure, Coder (AGPL-3.0) and DevPod (MPL-2.0) let you run dev containers on your own cloud, Kubernetes cluster or laptop, but they ask you to run and secure that setup and give you no instant share links. Replit is the pick for beginners who want a hosted app and an AI agent in one place, at a price from $18 a month on annual billing. The trade-off is polish: CodeSandbox's quick-share experience is hard to match with self-hosted tools. Stay if your team relies on its collaboration features. Otherwise, try the same repo in StackBlitz and Codespaces before deciding. We did not test any of these tools.

Good fit if

  • You share public front-end demos (StackBlitz is the pick)
  • Your team already uses GitHub for private repos (GitHub Codespaces is the pick)
  • You want to host workspaces on your own servers (Coder is the pick)
  • You want dev containers on any cloud or laptop (DevPod is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on CodeSandbox features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

CodeSandbox today: Free (CodeSandbox pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

StackBlitz

Compared with CodeSandbox: Browser IDE with a free Personal plan: unlimited public projects and GitHub repositories. Private repositories and org collaboration need a paid user, so it suits public demos better than private team work.

Price: Free (Personal plan includes unlimited public StackBlitz projects and GitHub repositories; collaborating on repositories owned by a GitHub organization needs Teams) (StackBlitz pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web. Proprietary SaaS.

Best for: Public demos and front-end experiments.

GitHub Codespaces

Compared with CodeSandbox: GitHub Free gives 120 compute hours and 15 GB-month storage monthly, then $0.18 an hour on a 2-core machine. It is full VS Code in the cloud tied to repos, but not a quick sandbox for throwaway snippets.

Price: Free (GitHub Free personal accounts get 120 compute hours and 15 GB-month storage per month; GitHub Pro gets 180 hours and 20 GB-month); paid from $0.18 per hour, 2-core machine, pay as you go beyond the included quota (GitHub Codespaces pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, VS Code. Proprietary.

Best for: Teams already on GitHub who want a full cloud dev box.

Worth knowing: Storage is $0.07 per GB-month beyond the quota. Without a payment method, usage stops when the quota runs out. Compute hours are multiplied by core count.

Coder

Compared with CodeSandbox: AGPL-3.0 platform you self-host to run cloud workspaces on your own infrastructure. You lose CodeSandbox's instant browser sharing and pay for your own servers, but you control the environment and data.

Price: Free (Open-source edition is free to self-host) (Coder pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted server. AGPL-3.0 (open source).

Project activity: 17.2k GitHub stars · latest release v2.37.7 (Oct 27, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Companies that want self-hosted cloud workspaces.

DevPod

Compared with CodeSandbox: MPL-2.0 client that creates dev containers on any cloud, Kubernetes or your own machine. There is no hosted sandbox or share link, so it replaces the environment, not CodeSandbox's collaboration.

Price: Free (Free open-source client; you pay only for the cloud or machine you run workspaces on) (DevPod pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. MPL-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 15.3k GitHub stars · latest release v0.6.15 (Mar 10, 2025) · last commit Nov 14, 2025

Best for: Developers who want dev containers without a vendor.

Replit

Compared with CodeSandbox: Browser IDE with hosting and an AI agent; a free Starter plan exists, with Core from $18 a month billed annually. Broader than CodeSandbox, with more focus on whole apps than front-end sandboxes.

Price: Free (Starter plan is free: daily Agent credits up to a monthly cap, monthly cloud credits, Lite build, and one published app whose link goes down after 30 days); paid from $18 per month, billed annually (Core; $20 billed monthly) (Replit pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Web. Proprietary SaaS.

Best for: Beginners building and hosting full apps online.
