Verdict:Leave Vercel when the bill grows faster than the traffic, or when you need servers you control. Netlify is the closest hosted swap for static sites and functions. Its free plan gives 300 credits a month, but bandwidth burns 20 credits per GB, so heavy downloads cost more than they look. Cloudflare is the right pick when your real need is DNS, CDN and DDoS protection in one place. Its free plan includes unmetered DDoS protection and universal SSL, but its build flow is less tailored to Next.js than Vercel's. Coolify and Dokku are for teams with a server and the patience to run it. Coolify is Apache-2.0, free forever when self-hosted, and deploys over SSH with Docker, Compose or Nixpacks. Dokku is MIT-licensed and drives deploys with git push on one host. Both trade Vercel's zero-ops setup for maintenance time. Fly.io runs apps in many regions and bills by usage, starting around $2.19 a month for a small machine, but new organizations get no free tier. Pick by workload. For a static site on a budget, choose Netlify or Cloudflare. For several small apps on a VPS, choose Dokku or Coolify. For a backend that must run near users, choose Fly.io. Before you move, check your monthly bandwidth, because that is where hosted bills surprise people.

Good fit if

  • You need a free static host with git deploys (Netlify is the pick)
  • You want DNS, CDN and DDoS protection in one free plan (Cloudflare is the pick)
  • You want to self-host and own the server (Coolify is the pick)
  • You run several small apps on one VPS (Dokku is the pick)
  • Your backend must run close to users in many regions (Fly.io is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Vercel features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Vercel today: Free (Hobby: 100 GB Fast Data Transfer, 1M CDN requests, 1M function invocations per month); paid from $20 per month (Pro, plus $20 per developer seat) (Vercel pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for Vercel alternatives

Vercel's Hobby plan is for personal, non-commercial use only, with capped usage and no option to buy more. Pro is $20 per developer seat per month with a $20 usage credit, 1 TB of transfer and 10M CDN requests. Beyond that, usage is billed pay-as-you-go: $0.15 per GB of transfer, $2 per 1M CDN requests and $0.60 per 1M function invocations. New teams get a default on-demand budget of $200. Per-seat plus metered pricing makes bills harder to predict.

Netlify

Compared with Vercel: Free plan gives 300 credits a month, and Personal is $9 a month for 1,000 credits. It covers static sites and functions like Vercel, but bandwidth costs 20 credits per GB, so heavy downloads drain the free plan.

Price: Free (Free plan: 300 credits per month); paid from $9 per month (Personal, 1,000 credits) (Netlify pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web. Proprietary.

Best for: Static sites on a budget.

Worth knowing: Bandwidth is charged at 20 credits per GB.

Cloudflare

Compared with Vercel: Free plan includes unmetered DDoS protection, CDN, universal SSL and a WAF managed ruleset. Pro is $20 a month billed annually. It is strong on network and DNS, while its build flow is less tailored to Next.js than Vercel's.

Price: Free (Free plan: DNS, unmetered DDoS protection, CDN, universal SSL, WAF managed ruleset); paid from $20 per month, billed annually (Pro; $25 billed monthly) (Cloudflare pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web. Proprietary.

Best for: DNS, CDN and DDoS protection.

Worth knowing: Business plan is $200/month billed annually ($250 monthly). Free plan has community support only and no uptime SLA.

Coolify

Compared with Vercel: Apache-2.0 and free forever self-hosted. It deploys over SSH with Docker, Compose or Nixpacks. Coolify Cloud starts at $5 a month for the managed option. You trade Vercel's zero-ops hosting for running the server yourself.

Price: Free (self-hosted is free forever); paid from $5 per month, Coolify Cloud base (includes 2 servers) (Coolify pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted, Coolify Cloud. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 65.1k GitHub stars · latest release v4.5.1 (Oct 27, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Worth knowing: Deploys over SSH using Docker, Compose or Nixpacks.

Dokku

Compared with Vercel: MIT-licensed single-host PaaS driven by git push. It runs several apps on one server for free, but it has no global edge network like the one Vercel provides.

Price: Free (Dokku pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Ubuntu 22.04/24.04/26.04, Debian 11+. MIT (open source).

Worth knowing: Single-host Docker PaaS driven by git push.

Fly.io

Compared with Vercel: Runs apps in many regions and bills by usage, from about $2.19 a month for a small machine. New organizations get no free tier, so you pay from the first deploy, unlike a free Vercel start.

Price: Paid from $2.19 per month for a shared-cpu-1x 256MB machine, 30 days continuous, usage-based (Fly.io pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Cloud. Proprietary.

Best for: Backends close to users.

Worth knowing: New organizations have no free tier or monthly allowance. New accounts get a trial of up to 2 hours of machine runtime or 7 days. Outbound data from $0.02/GB.

Heroku

Compared with Vercel: Eco dynos start at $5 per month and the cheapest Postgres is $5, with no free tier. You lose Vercel's edge network and preview deploys, but get a flat, predictable per-dyno price.

Price: Paid from $5 per month (Eco dyno, 0.5 GB RAM) (Heroku pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

DigitalOcean

Compared with Vercel: Droplets start at $4 per month, billed per second, giving you a full server instead of a frontend platform. You manage the stack yourself, but pricing is predictable and has no per-seat charge.

Price: Paid from $4 per month, smallest Droplet (DigitalOcean pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Render

Compared with Vercel: Free web services get 750 instance hours a month but spin down after 15 minutes idle, and free Postgres is 1 GB and expires after 30 days. Closer to a general app host than Vercel's frontend focus.

Price: Free (Free web services: 750 instance hours per month, spin down after 15 minutes idle, no persistent disk; free Postgres is 1 GB and expires after 30 days) (Render pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
