Verdict:CodePen's Free plan gives unlimited public Pens with three files per Pen, which is enough for most demos. Starter is $8 per month billed annually, Developer is $12 and Super is $26. People look elsewhere when they hit the three-file limit, want private work without paying, or need something closer to a real project. StackBlitz is the strongest swap for that last case: its Personal plan includes unlimited public projects and GitHub repositories, though collaborating on an organization's repository needs the Teams plan. JSFiddle is the lightest option for a shareable code sample, and CodeSandbox sits between the two; check their pricing pages before relying on a number. PlayCode has a free plan with private projects, and its paid Pro plan is $25 per month, more than CodePen's top paid tier of $26 only by a dollar but with a different focus on published apps and AI credits. Replit is a full cloud IDE and the most different from CodePen. The trade-off is community: CodePen is where front-end demos get shared, and none of these has the same culture of browsing and forking. Stay if you publish demos to be seen. Leave when you need private work for less or a bigger project.

CodePen today: Free (Free plan at $0: unlimited public Pens, 3 files per Pen); paid from $8 per month, billed annually (Starter, $96 a year); Developer $12 and Super $26 per month billed annually (CodePen pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
CodePen's free plan allows 3 files per Pen, no media uploads, and no custom domains for deployed Pens. Private, password-protected and collaborators-only Pens are PRO features, and inviting Editors depends on the owner being PRO. Starter PRO raises the limit to 50 files and 5 MB media files. If you downgrade, uploaded assets stop resolving, deployed Pens go offline, and a private Pen you edit becomes public.
