Verdict:Alteryx Starter lists at $250 per user per month billed annually, and the Professional and Enterprise tiers are contact-sales only. That puts it out of reach for most small teams, which is why searches for free alternatives are common. For desktop data prep with a similar drag-and-drop feel, KNIME is the realistic replacement: the Analytics Platform is free and open source, handles blending, cleaning and modeling, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Orange is lighter and better for exploring data and teaching than for repeatable jobs. If your real need is moving data on a schedule, Apache Hop is built for ETL, though expect to spend time on Java setup and deployment. n8n belongs in the list for a different reason: many Alteryx jobs are really integration chores, and n8n's self-hosted edition is free, though its license is source-available rather than open source. Power BI's Power Query covers a lot of cleaning for people who only need prep before a report. What you give up is Alteryx's spatial tools, predictive library and governed sharing server. Check which of those your workflows call before switching, and port one scheduled workflow end to end as a test.

Good fit if

  • You need desktop data prep and blending (KNIME Analytics Platform is the pick)
  • You want to explore data and teach it without code (Orange is the pick)
  • You run scheduled ETL jobs on servers (Apache Hop is the pick)
  • Your workflows are mostly connecting apps and APIs (n8n is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Alteryx features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Alteryx today: Paid from $250 per user/month, billed annually (Starter, cloud only) (Alteryx pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for Alteryx alternatives

Alteryx's only public price is Starter at $250 per user per month billed annually, cloud-only and limited to 1 to 10 Basic users. Desktop use, macros, geospatial prep, cloud scheduling and 100+ data connectors sit in Professional, which is contact-sales, as is Enterprise. Starter includes 50 automation runs, against 15,000 on Professional, and there is no permanent free tier, only a 30-day trial.

KNIME Analytics Platform

Compared with Alteryx: Free and open source visual workflow tool for data prep, blending and machine learning, so it is the closest match to Alteryx Designer. You lose Alteryx's polish and some connectors, but you gain a no-cost desktop platform.

Price: Free (Analytics Platform is free and open source; Business Hub is a separate paid product) (KNIME Analytics Platform pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Free and open source (per KNIME) (open source).

Best for: Desktop data prep workflows.

Orange

Compared with Alteryx: GPL widget-based tool for data visualization and machine learning with no coding. It has much less ETL depth than Alteryx, but costs nothing and is quicker to learn for analysis and teaching.

Price: Free (Free and open source; donations requested) (Orange pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. GPL-3.0 or later (open source).

Project activity: 5.7k GitHub stars · latest release 3.40.0 (Dec 20, 2025) · last commit Oct 26, 2026

Best for: Exploratory analysis and teaching.

Worth knowing: Widget-based visual workflows for data visualization and machine learning, no coding required.

Apache Hop

Compared with Alteryx: Apache-2.0 visual pipeline designer aimed at ETL. It lacks Alteryx's spatial and predictive tools and has a steeper setup in Java, but there is no license cost and it suits production data movement.

Price: Free (Free open source software) (Apache Hop pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux (Java). Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 1.5k GitHub stars · latest release 2.19.0-rc1 (Aug 12, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Production ETL pipelines.

Worth knowing: Visual pipeline and workflow designer for ETL; building from source requires Java 21.

n8n

Compared with Alteryx: Automates app-to-app workflows rather than analytic data prep. Not a substitute for Alteryx's blending tools, but cheaper to run: Cloud Starter is 20 EUR a month, and the self-hosted edition is free.

Price: Free (Self-hosted Community Edition from GitHub under the Sustainable Use License; Cloud has a free trial); paid from EUR 20 per month, Cloud Starter billed annually, 2.5K executions (n8n pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Self-hosted. Sustainable Use License (source-available).

Best for: Automating tasks around data.

Worth knowing: Not open source in the OSI sense; .ee. files need a paid license. Annual billing saves 17% versus monthly.

Power BI

Compared with Alteryx: Power Query inside Power BI cleans and shapes data, and Desktop is free. It covers less than Alteryx for spatial and predictive work, but Pro costs $14 per user per month against Alteryx's $250 Starter seat.

Price: Free (Free account and free Power BI Desktop for authoring; sharing reports needs Pro or Premium Per User); paid from $14 per user/month, billed yearly (Pro) (Power BI pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Windows (Desktop). Proprietary.

Best for: Analysts already reporting in Power BI.

Worth knowing: Premium Per User is $24 per user per month billed yearly; the Premium Per User add-on is $14 for existing Pro or E5 holders.

Tableau

Compared with Alteryx: Analytics and dashboards on web and desktop, with Creator at $75 per user per month billed annually on Tableau Cloud Standard, against Alteryx Starter at $250. Every deployment needs at least one Creator license.

Price: Paid from $75 per user/month, billed annually (Creator, Standard edition on Tableau Cloud) (Tableau pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Which one to pick

  • You need desktop data prep and blending: KNIME Analytics Platform
  • You want to explore data and teach it without code: Orange
  • You run scheduled ETL jobs on servers: Apache Hop
  • Your workflows are mostly connecting apps and APIs: n8n
