Verdict:Tableau is priced for analysts who live in it: Creator is $75 per user per month on the Standard edition, Explorer $42 and Viewer $15, and every deployment needs at least one Creator. That adds up fast once reports go to a few dozen readers. Most teams that leave want the same dashboards at lower cost. Power BI is the cheapest like-for-like move, with a free Desktop app and Pro at $14, provided your organization already uses Microsoft 365. For no license cost at all, Metabase and Superset both serve dashboards from a SQL database; Metabase is friendlier to non-technical colleagues, while Superset gives engineers more control. Data Studio is enough when the audience only needs shared reports, and Grafana is the better choice when the data is live metrics rather than business tables. What you give up is real: Tableau's visual exploration, table calculations and level-of-detail expressions are more capable than anything in the free tools, and your existing workbooks will not import. Rebuild your three most-used dashboards in a candidate tool first and count how many Tableau-specific calculations you need to redo before you cancel.

Tableau today: Paid from $75 per user/month, billed annually (Creator, Standard edition on Tableau Cloud) (Tableau pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Tableau prices by role, and every deployment needs at least one Creator. A team with a few analysts and many readers still pays for every Viewer. Figures are from Tableau's Cloud pricing page.
Compared with Tableau: Costs far less than Tableau: Pro is $14 per user per month against $75 for a Tableau Creator seat. Desktop authoring is free. You lose some chart freedom, but you gain tight Excel and Microsoft 365 integration.
Price: Free (Free account and free Power BI Desktop for authoring; sharing reports needs Pro or Premium Per User); paid from $14 per user/month, billed yearly (Pro) (Power BI pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Best for: Microsoft 365 organizations.
Worth knowing: Premium Per User is $24 per user per month billed yearly; the Premium Per User add-on is $14 for existing Pro or E5 holders.
Compared with Tableau: Free open source edition with unlimited users, versus Tableau's per-seat pricing. Less visual flexibility than Tableau, but non-analysts can ask questions of a database without training. Hosted Starter is $90 a month.
Price: Free (Open source edition is free to self-host with unlimited users); paid from $90 per month, Starter cloud billed yearly, first 5 users included (Metabase pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Compared with Tableau: Free self-hosted Grafana handles live operational data better than Tableau's extract-driven model. It is weaker for ad hoc business analysis. Cloud's free plan includes 3 users and 10k metric series.
Price: Free (10k metric series, 50 GB logs, 50 GB traces, 3 users, 14-day retention); paid from $19 per month platform fee plus usage (Cloud Pro) (Grafana pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Price: See pricing page (Looker pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Compared with Tableau: Qlik Cloud Starter is $300 a month billed annually for 10 users and 10 GB of data, so small teams get a flat price instead of Tableau's per-role licensing. Associative engine instead of Tableau's visual-first workflow.
