Verdict:Leave Metabase when you need deeper modelling or a wider reporting suite, not when you want simple questions over a database. Its open-source edition is free to self-host with unlimited users, so the cost is your server and your maintenance time. Apache Superset is the open-source option that keeps the self-hosted model. It is Apache-2.0, carries no license fee, and connects to many SQL databases with a richer chart builder for analysts. Power BI is the choice inside a Microsoft shop. Authoring is free with Power BI Desktop, but sharing reports needs Pro at $14 per user a month billed yearly, and it cannot be self-hosted. Data Studio is a no-cost option for dashboards on Google data sources, with a paid Pro tier (see Google for current pricing). Tableau is the enterprise option. Creator on Tableau Cloud Standard is $75 per user a month billed annually, which fits large analysis teams and costs far more than Metabase's free edition. Grafana fits a different job: metrics and logs over time. It is free to self-host under AGPL-3.0, and Cloud Pro starts at $19 a month plus usage. Pick Superset for free self-hosted BI, Power BI for Microsoft-heavy teams, and Tableau only when you have the budget and analysts to match it.
