Verdict:Minitab's own pricing page lists no price and tells you to fill in a form, so ask for a quote to get the real cost. For anyone paying that out of pocket or from a small budget, the free options are strong for ordinary statistics. Jamovi is the easiest: a spreadsheet-style interface on top of R, free on desktop, and also free in a cloud Guest plan. JASP is similar, and adds Bayesian versions of common tests. PSPP is a GNU program with an SPSS-style interface, so choose it if you come from SPSS rather than Minitab. R gives you everything, including plots and models Minitab does not offer, but it is a programming language, and you must learn it. Orange and KNIME are visual tools aimed at data mining and machine learning, not at classical quality-improvement workflows. The trade-off is industrial quality tools: Minitab is popular in manufacturing and Six Sigma settings for control charts, capability analysis and design of experiments, and the free tools cover those less completely. If a regulated process or a company standard requires Minitab output, staying is reasonable. If you teach statistics or analyze survey and experiment data, start with jamovi and check that it covers your tests. Test any of them on your own datasets before you switch.

Minitab Statistical Software today: See pricing page (Minitab Statistical Software pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Minitab publishes no price: its pricing page asks you to fill in a form and wait for a sales contact. The product page lists modules such as Predictive Analytics, Reliability and Sample Size separately, and training and consulting are sold as separate services, so the total depends on what you add. The same page says the software can integrate with R and Python, so teams already writing R or Python code can pair it with, or replace it by, those languages.
Compared with Minitab Statistical Software: Free statistical spreadsheet built on R, with a free desktop app and free cloud Guest plan. Fewer quality-control and process-improvement tools than Minitab, but clean tests, regression and plots with no cost.
Price: Free (Free statistical spreadsheet powered by R, with a free cloud option) (jamovi pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Desktop, Cloud (browser). Free and open source (LICENSE.md in the repository, not read) (open source).
Project activity: 799 GitHub stars · latest release v2.7.30 (May 23, 2026) · last commit Oct 26, 2026
Best for: Students and researchers needing everyday statistics.
Compared with Minitab Statistical Software: Free open-source project from the University of Amsterdam with classical and Bayesian versions of standard analyses. It doesn't cover Minitab's industrial quality tools like control charts at the same depth.
Price: Free (Free open-source project supported by the University of Amsterdam; classical and Bayesian analyses) (JASP pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. AGPL-3.0 (open source).
Project activity: 1k GitHub stars · latest release v0.99.0 (Oct 21, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Researchers wanting Bayesian options.
Compared with Minitab Statistical Software: GNU PSPP is a free replacement for SPSS with no license fees and no expiration. Its interface resembles SPSS, not Minitab, and it covers fewer analyses, but it handles routine tests.
Price: Free (No license fees, no expiration period, no add-on packages to buy) (GNU PSPP pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Desktop. GPL-3.0 or later (open source).
Best for: Users coming from SPSS.
Compared with Minitab Statistical Software: GPL language for statistical computing and graphics. Unlimited capability through packages, but code-based, so you give up Minitab's menu-driven workflow and need time to learn it.
Price: Free (Free software under the GNU General Public License) (R pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. GNU GPL (open source).
Best for: People willing to learn code for full flexibility.
Worth knowing: A language and environment, not a point-and-click app; most people pair it with an editor or a GUI such as jamovi.
Compared with Minitab Statistical Software: GPL-3.0-or-later visual data mining tool with drag-and-drop workflows. Strong for exploration and machine learning, weaker than Minitab for classical quality and Six Sigma work.
Price: Free (Free and open source; donations requested) (Orange pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. GPL-3.0 or later (open source).
Project activity: 5.7k GitHub stars · latest release 3.40.0 (Dec 20, 2025) · last commit Oct 26, 2026
Best for: Visual data exploration and machine learning.
Worth knowing: Widget-based visual workflows for data visualization and machine learning, no coding required.
Compared with Minitab Statistical Software: Free and open-source analytics platform with low-code visual workflows. Built for data prep and machine learning more than Minitab's statistical menus, and it takes longer to set up.
Price: Free (Analytics Platform is free and open source; Business Hub is a separate paid product) (KNIME Analytics Platform pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Free and open source (per KNIME) (open source).
Best for: Data pipelines and automation.
Compared with Minitab Statistical Software: Paid technical computing environment. The Individual license is listed at USD 940 per year, with no free plan, only a trial. Minitab's price is quote-only, so MATLAB at least gives you a public figure to budget against.
Price: Paid from $940 per per year, Individual license (pricing page lists 'USD 940' with Simulink and add-ons; taxes excluded) (MATLAB pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
