Verdict:Whimsical's free plan is tight: 50 board objects a month, 5MB per file and 1GB of storage, and Pro is $10 per editor a month. That cap is the usual reason people look elsewhere, since a single detailed flowchart can use up the allowance. If you only need flowcharts and have no collaborators, draw.io is the plain answer: free, no sign-up, works in a browser or as a desktop app, and saves files where you tell it to. You give up the tidy Whimsical look and its live boards. If the work is sketch-first and shared, Excalidraw or tldraw cover it for free, though their output looks rougher. Penpot is the pick when the real job is wireframes, because its free plan has 8 team members and unlimited viewers, but it is a design tool and slower for quick diagrams. Miro fits workshops and large boards; the free plan allows only 3 editable boards. Developers who want diagrams inside docs can write Mermaid text and skip the canvas entirely. Whimsical remains worth paying for if you rely on its speed for docs, mind maps and wireframes together, and none of these bundles all three as neatly.

Whimsical today: Free (Free plan: up to 50 board objects per month, 5MB per file, 1GB total storage); paid from $10 per editor/month (the page defaults to annual billing, which it says saves 17%) (Whimsical pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Why people look for Whimsical alternatives

Whimsical's free plan allows unlimited boards but limits you to 50 board objects and 50 doc blocks per month, 7 days of version history, 5 MB per file and 1 GB of storage, and exports carry a watermark. Pro is $10 per editor per month on annual billing and lifts those caps, removes the watermark and adds 90-day history. Unlimited version history, SAML single sign-on and private teams are Business-only at $20 per editor, and AI credits beyond the included 10 per member are bought separately.
