Verdict:Leave Wave when you need more than invoices and simple bookkeeping. Wave's Starter costs nothing for invoices, estimates, bills and records, and card payments cost 2.9% plus $0.60 a transaction. Pro is $19 a month billed monthly, or $190 billed annually, and that is the first paid step. A sole trader who sends invoices and keeps a few records gets little from switching, because Wave already covers that for free. If your books need a real ledger, bank feeds and several users, Xero's Early plan at $27 a month with no per-user fees is the natural next step, though it is a fuller tool and costs more. Zoho Books is the free option that scales further, as long as annual revenue stays under $50K, and it caps you at one user plus one accountant. GnuCash is free and open source, but it is a desktop tool with no bank feeds or online invoicing, so the trade-off is your own time. Manager is a free desktop choice for one user. Invoice Ninja suits freelancers whose work is mostly client billing and time tracking rather than a general ledger. Stay on Wave if invoicing is the job, and move when you need a ledger or more users.
