Verdict:Leave Pinecone if you want a free vector store you can run yourself, or if you want to avoid per-index managed pricing for a small project. Pinecone's pricing page lists a Starter plan that is free, with 2 GB storage, 2 million write units and 1 million read units per month, one project and two users on AWS us-east-1 only. Builder is $20 per month flat, Standard starts at $50 per month minimum and Enterprise at $500. Qdrant is Apache-2.0 and self-hosted use is free, so it is the closest open replacement. Weaviate's core is BSD-3-Clause, but code in its wl directory needs an enterprise licence, so read the licence before you build on it. Milvus is Apache-2.0 for larger clusters. Chroma and LanceDB are Apache-2.0 and suit prototypes, local apps and embedded use with less operations work. The trade-off is operations against managed scaling. Pinecone removes cluster management, backups and region choice, and each open option moves that work to your team. Estimate your vector count and query load first, then test the replacement against that workload before you cut over.

Why people look for Pinecone alternatives

Pinecone's free Starter plan is limited to 2 GB of storage, 2M write units and 1M read units a month, one AWS region (us-east-1), 1 project and 2 users, and it excludes backups and restore.
