Good fit if

  • You want maximum plugin choice (Jenkins is the pick)
  • You want a small CI server (Woodpecker CI is the pick)
  • You already host code on Gitea (Gitea is the pick)
  • You deploy to Kubernetes from Git (Argo CD is the pick)
  • You build pipelines inside a cluster (Tekton Pipelines is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You cannot host, patch and back up a server yourself and want a vendor to run it

Continuous integration and delivery tools fall into two groups, and mixing them up leads to confusion. Build and test runners, such as Jenkins, Concourse and Woodpecker CI, watch your repository and run jobs. Kubernetes-native tools, such as Tekton, Argo Workflows and Argo CD, assume you already run a cluster and use it for everything. Argo CD is only about delivery: it keeps a cluster in line with what is in Git and does not build anything. Jenkins is the veteran, extremely flexible through plugins, though plugin upkeep is the main cost. Woodpecker is a lighter option that began as a fork of Drone and uses simple pipeline files. Concourse runs every job in a container and favors strict, declarative pipelines. Gitea includes its own Actions-style runner, handy if you already host code on it. The trade-off is operations against features. A hosted service from your code platform costs little and needs no maintenance, so self-hosting only makes sense when you want control over runners, secrets or data location, or need to run on your own hardware. If you do self-host, size the machines for peak builds and plan upgrades, because a neglected build server becomes a security risk.

Project activity: 26.7k GitHub stars · latest release jenkins-2.587 (Oct 20, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Teams with varied build needs.

Worth knowing: Free and self-hosted. The repo LICENSE.txt is MIT. Plugin ecosystem is the main maintenance cost.

Compare: Jenkins alternatives
