Load testing tools answer a narrow question: what happens to my service when many users arrive at once. The open-source options differ mainly in how you describe the test. Apache JMeter uses a graphical editor and is the most widely known, with plugins for many protocols, though its Java interface can be heavy. k6 and Locust use code, JavaScript and Python respectively, which keeps tests in version control and makes them easier to review. Vegeta, oha and bombardier are command-line tools that hammer a URL at a set rate and report latency, ideal for a quick check on one endpoint but not for multi-step user journeys. Choose by what you need to simulate. A realistic checkout flow with sessions needs k6, Locust or JMeter. A simple question like how many requests per second this endpoint handles can be answered in a minute with oha. Two cautions apply to all of them. Generate load from a machine other than the one under test, or the numbers will mislead you. And never point them at systems you do not own or have permission to test, since the traffic looks like an attack. Run tests in an environment that resembles production, and compare results over time, not once.
