Open-source animation covers three different jobs, and the tool you want depends on which one you are doing. Pencil2D, Tahoma2D and OpenToonz are 2D, frame-by-frame or cut-out tools in the traditional sense. Synfig Studio is vector-based and tweens between keyframes, which saves drawing time on simple motion. Krita includes animation timelines on top of a full painting app. Blender is the odd one out: it started as 3D software and now also does 2D with Grease Pencil, but it asks the most from you in learning time and hardware. If you are new to animating, Pencil2D is the lightest start, a small GPL-2.0 program that stays out of your way. If you want studio-style features such as scanning, effects and cut-out puppets, OpenToonz, which is available under the New BSD License and was customized by Studio Ghibli, is the heavier answer, and Tahoma2D builds on it with stop-motion camera support. The trade-off across all of them is documentation and polish: community tools rarely ship with the tutorials and templates of paid suites, so budget time for learning. Check the platform too, since OpenToonz and Tahoma2D list Windows and macOS system requirements, not Linux, while Pencil2D, Synfig and Blender cover all three desktop systems.
Simple GPL-2.0 2D animation app for Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD. Bitmap and vector layers are easy to learn but it lacks the effects and rigging of heavier suites.
Price: Free (Free and open source) (Pencil2D pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD. GPL-2.0 (open source) (license source).

Worth knowing: Hand-drawn 2D animation with bitmap and vector layers, developed by volunteers.
GPL-3.0 vector 2D animation studio for Windows, macOS and Linux. Tweening between keyframes saves drawing, but the interface and bones system take time to learn.

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. GPL-3.0 (open source) (license source).
Best for: Vector cartoons and motion graphics.
Worth knowing: 2D animation with vector and bitmap artwork. Stated requirements: a dual-core 2 GHz CPU and 2 GB of RAM.
GPL painting app with frame-by-frame animation tools built in. Best when drawing quality matters more than production features such as camera and effects.

GPL-3.0-or-later and free for commercial work. Grease Pencil gives 2D animation inside a full 3D suite, at the cost of the steepest learning curve on this list.
Price: Free (Free for any purpose, including commercial work) (Blender pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. GPL-3.0-or-later (open source) (license source).
