Verdict:Kahoot earns its place for a live game in front of a room. Most of its free use is a short demo, and the free test sessions cap at 15 participants for 15 minutes. So the decision is whether you need the live game format at all. If you do, Mentimeter is the closest swap. Its free plan covers 50 participants a month, and its Basic plan costs $11.99 per presenter a month billed yearly. Wooclap offers a free Starter plan with 5 questions a month, which works for a single class trial, though its participant limits are stated inconsistently. If your quizzes are self-paced, Tally and Fillout are better. They are form builders, with unlimited free forms on their free tiers, and they suit quizzes people take on their own time. Typeform is a survey tool with a limited free plan, and it fits when you want a polished survey more than a game. The main trade-off is that none of the cheaper options gives Kahoot's fast, competitive game screen. You get a longer free run or a cheaper seat, but the energy of a room racing through a leaderboard is lost, so test the format with your real audience before you cancel a paid plan.
