Good fit if

  • You bill clients hourly as a solo freelancer (Harvest is the pick)
  • You have a team of five and want the most free tracking (Clockify is the pick)
  • You must host data on your own server (Kimai is the pick)
  • You want an open-source tool but prefer a hosted service (solidtime is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

Time trackers fall into three groups, and the group matters more than the brand. Personal trackers such as Toggl Track and Harvest suit freelancers who bill by the hour; their free plans cover 3 users and 1 seat respectively, so they work for one person or a very small team. Team trackers such as Clockify, Everhour and TimeCamp allow larger free groups, up to 5 users on Clockify and Everhour and no user limit stated on TimeCamp's free plan, but they hide reports, approvals or integrations behind paid tiers. Open-source trackers, Kimai and solidtime, avoid the per-seat step entirely: Kimai is AGPL and self-hosted for free, while solidtime has a free Solo plan for one user and a hosted paid tier. The important detail is what the free plan does not give you. Clockify limits reports to a one-month range, Everhour requires a paid plan for integrations, and Harvest limits you to 2 projects. Before choosing, ask whether you bill clients from tracked time, whether you need approval of hours, and whether data should live on your own server, because switching trackers later loses history. The seven tools below are free with the limit noted for each.
