Good fit if

  • I record alone and edit on my computer (Audacity is the pick)
  • I interview guests who are far away (Cleanfeed is the pick)
  • I want to cut episodes by editing text (Descript is the pick)
  • I want to host my own feed (Castopod is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

Podcasting needs separate tools for recording, editing and hosting, and free options exist for each step. For recording on your own computer, Audacity and Tenacity record and edit with no limit, and Ardour handles multitrack work if you want a studio. Remote interviews are easier in a browser; Cleanfeed's Lite plan offers unlimited recording time with two guests, though remote audio is mono. Descript lets you edit episodes through the transcript, with a free plan of 60 media minutes a month and watermarked video export. Hosting is where free gets harder, because a podcast needs somewhere to serve audio files and an RSS feed. Castopod is open-source and free to run, using the AGPL-3.0 licence, but you provide the server. If you would rather not run one, check the free tier of a hosting service before you launch, and look at what happens to your files and feed if you leave. Most free recording tools do not include hosting or distribution to Apple Podcasts and Spotify, so plan that step before the first episode. Keep source files for every episode, record in a quiet room with a headset microphone, and test a short episode end to end before you announce anything.
