A free photo organizer helps you find, tag and back up a large library, and the first decision is whether your photos live on your computer or on a server. Desktop software such as digiKam, free and open source for Linux, Windows and macOS, manages folders on your own disk with tags, face recognition and metadata editing. XnView MP is a fast viewer and browser, free for private use. Adobe Bridge is a free file browser for Adobe users, though raw editing inside it needs a paid Adobe subscription. If you want access from your phone, self-hosted galleries such as Immich, PhotoPrism, Piwigo and Lychee run on your own server, with no fee but with the work of setting up and maintaining it. Hosted options are simpler: Google Photos gives 15 GB shared across your Google account, and Ente Photos gives 10 GB free with end-to-end encryption on the project's open-source apps. The trade-off is effort against convenience. Self-hosting gives privacy and unlimited space for the price of your time, while a hosted free tier works in minutes but fills up, and the paid tiers begin at $1.99 for Google and $2.49 for Ente. Eight options follow.
