GIMP 3.0 — non-destructive filter workflow

An image converter has two jobs that people mix up: changing the format, say HEIC or WebP to JPG, and keeping the result usable. Most free tools handle the first well; the second depends on options you may not see, such as color profile handling, transparency and metadata. Pick by volume. For one or two files, an online converter is simplest, and CloudConvert allows 10 conversions a day on the free tier with a 5 minute processing limit per job. For folders, desktop software is faster and keeps files off the internet: XnConvert reads over 500 formats and exports to about 70, and is free for private or educational use. ImageMagick does the same from the command line and fits scripts. Squoosh converts to modern web formats right in the browser without uploading. GIMP and Photopea open almost anything and re-export it, which suits files that need editing first. Check three things before you convert a batch: whether transparency survives, whether the tool rewrites color profiles, and whether it keeps or strips metadata. The trade-off is convenience against privacy and volume: web tools need no install but cap usage, while desktop tools are unlimited. Seven options follow.
