Good fit if

  • You rewrite a sentence or two while drafting (Wordtune is the pick)
  • You also need grammar and tone checks (Grammarly is the pick)
  • You want full control over tone with unlimited-feeling use (ChatGPT is the pick)
  • You write in several languages or must self-host (LanguageTool is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

Paraphrasing tools rewrite a passage in different words, and the free versions all trade quantity for convenience in the same way: you get a few rewrites a day, a short text window, or a limited number of AI runs. That makes the real question how much text you rewrite at once. If you reword a sentence or two while drafting emails or essays, Wordtune, Grammarly and LanguageTool give you inline suggestions inside the editor you already use, with caps of a few rewrites per day. If you reword whole paragraphs, a general chatbot such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude has far looser limits and lets you say exactly what you want changed, such as shorter, more formal or simpler, though you must paste text into a chat window. Be careful with paraphrasing for school or publishing: rewording someone else's passage without citing it is still plagiarism, and many detectors flag it. For translations or grammar-only fixes, the better category is a writing assistant, not a paraphraser. The seven tools here are either free for light use or free with clear daily limits, and each entry says where the cap sits.

Wordtune

The Basic plan includes 10 rewrites a day, plus unlimited spelling and grammar checks. It rewrites sentence by sentence inside your draft, so it suits polishing rather than bulk rewording.

Price: Free (Basic plan with 10 rewrites and AI suggestions a day, 3 AI summaries a month and unlimited spelling and grammar checks); paid from $4.89 per month, billed annually (Advanced) (Wordtune pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Browser extension. Proprietary.

Best for: Polishing a sentence at a time.

Grammarly

The free plan includes 100 AI prompts alongside spelling, grammar and tone help, so you can ask for rewrites while checking your writing. Heavier use pushes you toward the Pro plan at $12 a month.
