Verdict:QuillBot's paraphraser is the reason most people use it, so the right alternative depends on whether you need rewriting, correction or both. For rewriting a sentence several ways, Wordtune is the nearest match, with a free Basic plan of 10 rewrites a day. For correcting mistakes and tone, Grammarly's free plan includes 100 AI prompts and covers more situations than QuillBot's checker. LanguageTool is the pick if you want open source and optional self-hosting, with a free plan of 2,000 characters per text field. Harper goes further on privacy: it runs locally under Apache-2.0, but it only checks grammar. ProWritingAid fits writers of long documents who want style reports, and Sapling fits support teams that write the same replies all day. ChatGPT's free plan can do all of the above through prompts, which is flexible, but you must write the instruction each time and review the output closely. The trade-off is that none is a drop-in paraphraser with QuillBot's modes. Check QuillBot's own pricing page for its current free limits and Premium price. If you submit academic work, check your institution's rules on AI rewriting before relying on any of these tools.
