Verdict:DBeaver Community is free under Apache-2.0, so most people searching for an alternative are not escaping a price. They are escaping its weight: it is a Java app that can feel slow, and its interface has a lot of panels. If that is you, Beekeeper Studio is the nearest step down in complexity, with a free Community Edition for solo use, students, nonprofits and small firms. DbGate is another free option and also ships as a web app. If you only use PostgreSQL, pgAdmin is free and goes deeper on Postgres administration than DBeaver does, though it does nothing for MySQL or SQL Server. Adminer is the lowest-friction choice when you just need to peek at a database over a browser and cannot install anything. DataGrip has stronger code completion and refactoring, and JetBrains made it free for non-commercial use, but a company that uses it for paid work needs a license. TablePlus is fast and tidy and costs money per seat. The trade-off is breadth: DBeaver connects to a very large range of databases from one app, and the alternatives here cover fewer. Stay on DBeaver if you juggle many engines, and switch if your daily work is one or two databases and you want a quicker tool.

Good fit if

  • You use only PostgreSQL (pgAdmin is the pick)
  • You want a simpler, lighter SQL editor (Beekeeper Studio is the pick)
  • You need to reach a database from a browser (Adminer is the pick)
  • You work on hobby or open-source projects in JetBrains tools (DataGrip is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on DBeaver features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

DBeaver today: Free (Community Edition is free under Apache-2.0; paid editions not checked) (DBeaver pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for DBeaver alternatives

DBeaver Community is free under Apache-2.0, but the vendor's edition page puts many features in paid editions. Lite is $113 a year or $12 a month and lacks the task scheduler, data migration, ERD editing, schema compare and SQL debugger; Enterprise is $255 a year and adds them. Cloud explorer and native AWS, GCP and Azure support need Ultimate at $510 a year, and shared scripts, query history and SSO need Team Edition at $1,630 a year.

Beekeeper Studio

Compared with DBeaver: A lighter, cleaner SQL editor. Its Community Edition is free for students, solo users, nonprofits and firms under 10 staff or $1m revenue. It supports fewer exotic databases than DBeaver, but the interface is simpler.

Price: Free (Community Edition: free; for students, solo users, nonprofits and firms with under 10 staff or under $1m annual revenue); paid from $9 per per user/month, billed yearly (Indie) (Beekeeper Studio pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Not stated.

Best for: Developers who find DBeaver heavy.

DbGate

Compared with DBeaver: GPL-3.0 database client covering MySQL, PostgreSQL and other engines, with a web version. It is less established than DBeaver, so expect fewer drivers and plugins, but it is free and a smaller install.

Price: Free (Open source under GPL-3.0; no paid plan checked) (DbGate pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. GPL-3.0 (open source).

Project activity: 7.4k GitHub stars · latest release v7.3.3 (Oct 27, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Open-source fans who also want a web client.

pgAdmin

Compared with DBeaver: PostgreSQL-licensed and built only for PostgreSQL. You lose DBeaver's multi-database support, but get deeper Postgres administration tools and no cost.

Price: Free (Open source under the PostgreSQL License; no paid plan) (pgAdmin pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux, Containers. PostgreSQL License (open source).

Best for: PostgreSQL-only teams.

Worth knowing: Open-source administration and development platform for PostgreSQL.

Adminer

Compared with DBeaver: A single PHP file under Apache-2.0 or GPL-2.0, run in the browser. No desktop install and almost no setup, but fewer editing features than DBeaver's full client.

Price: Free (Open source under Apache-2.0 or GPL-2.0; no paid plan) (Adminer pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web (PHP). Apache-2.0 or GPL-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 7.9k GitHub stars · latest release v6.2.0 (Oct 23, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Quick access to a server database from a browser.

Worth knowing: Single PHP file for web database administration.

DataGrip

Compared with DBeaver: JetBrains' IDE for databases, now free for non-commercial use. Smarter code completion than DBeaver, but commercial use needs a paid JetBrains license.

Price: Free (Free for non-commercial use (learning, hobby or open-source development, content creation); commercial use needs a paid license) (DataGrip pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Proprietary (JetBrains subscription).

Best for: Developers who live in JetBrains tools.

TablePlus

Compared with DBeaver: Fast native client with a one-time license, $79 per seat on Team with a 3-seat minimum. The free version is a limited trial, so it is paid in practice, unlike DBeaver Community.

Price: Free (Free version limited to 2 open tabs, 2 open windows and 2 advanced filters at a time (filters unavailable on the free Windows version); limits may change without notice); paid from $79 per per seat, one-time (Team, minimum 3 seats) (TablePlus pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: macOS, Windows, Linux. Proprietary.

Best for: Mac users who want a polished paid client.

Worth knowing: Basic is $99 and Standard is $129 one-time per license. Free version is a trial limited to 2 open tabs, 2 windows and 2 advanced filters, so no free plan is counted.

Compared with DBeaver: Sold as perpetual per-user licences with a trial download; the store page shows no amounts. A paid desktop client for people who would rather buy one tool than choose between DBeaver editions.

Price: See pricing page (Navicat Premium pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
