Verdict:DataGrip is now free for non-commercial use, per JetBrains' October 2025 announcement: learning, hobby or open-source work, and content creation are covered, while commercial work still needs a paid license. Check JetBrains' price page for paid plans. That changes who needs an alternative. Students and hobbyists can just use DataGrip. A company paying for developer seats might not want to. For them, DBeaver Community is the obvious free replacement: Apache-2.0 and broad database support, though you give up some of DataGrip's refactoring and smart completion. Beekeeper Studio is lighter and friendlier for solo developers and small firms, and DbGate is a GPL-3.0 option that also runs in a browser. If your world is PostgreSQL only, pgAdmin is free and goes deep on administration. TablePlus is the choice if you want a fast native client and are willing to pay $79 per seat one-time on the Team plan. Adminer fits quick, occasional edits on a server without installing anything. The trade-off is IDE depth: JetBrains' code completion, refactoring and version-control integration are hard to match in the free tools. If your queries are long and complex, test DBeaver on a real schema first. If you mostly browse tables and run small queries, any of these will do. We did not test them here.

Good fit if

  • You want a free multi-database client for work (DBeaver is the pick)
  • You want a lighter, simpler editor (Beekeeper Studio is the pick)
  • You only manage PostgreSQL (pgAdmin is the pick)
  • You want a fast native app and will pay (TablePlus is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on DataGrip features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

DataGrip today: Free (Free for non-commercial use (learning, hobby or open-source development, content creation); commercial use needs a paid license) (DataGrip pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for DataGrip alternatives

DataGrip is free only for non-commercial use, meaning learning, hobby or open-source development and content creation. Anyone using it for paid work needs a commercial JetBrains subscription, so employees and freelancers fall outside the free licence. JetBrains prices subscriptions per user per year, with discounts applied in the second and third year.

DBeaver

Compared with DataGrip: Free Community Edition under Apache-2.0 that connects to a very wide range of databases. It has less polished code completion and refactoring than DataGrip, and the Java UI can feel heavy.

Price: Free (Community Edition is free under Apache-2.0; paid editions not checked) (DBeaver pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Apache-2.0 (Community Edition) (open source).

Project activity: 52.2k GitHub stars · latest release 26.2.3 (Oct 18, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Multi-database work without a license fee.

Beekeeper Studio

Compared with DataGrip: Cleaner, lighter SQL editor with a free Community Edition for solo users, students, nonprofits and small firms. It lacks DataGrip's deep IDE refactoring, but is quicker to learn.

Price: Free (Community Edition: free; for students, solo users, nonprofits and firms with under 10 staff or under $1m annual revenue); paid from $9 per per user/month, billed yearly (Indie) (Beekeeper Studio pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Not stated.

Best for: Developers who want a simple SQL client.

DbGate

Compared with DataGrip: GPL-3.0 client for MySQL, PostgreSQL and other databases, also runnable in a browser. Fewer IDE features than DataGrip and a smaller community, but no cost and no license check.

Price: Free (Open source under GPL-3.0; no paid plan checked) (DbGate pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. GPL-3.0 (open source).

Best for: Open-source users wanting a web option.

pgAdmin

Compared with DataGrip: Free PostgreSQL-licensed tool built for PostgreSQL. Not multi-database like DataGrip, but good for Postgres administration, and open source.

Price: Free (Open source under the PostgreSQL License; no paid plan) (pgAdmin pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux, Containers. PostgreSQL License (open source).

Best for: PostgreSQL administrators.

Worth knowing: Open-source administration and development platform for PostgreSQL.

TablePlus

Compared with DataGrip: Native, fast client; Team is $79 per seat one-time with a 3-seat minimum. It trades DataGrip's IDE depth for speed, and its free version is a limited trial.

Price: Free (Free version limited to 2 open tabs, 2 open windows and 2 advanced filters at a time (filters unavailable on the free Windows version); limits may change without notice); paid from $79 per per seat, one-time (Team, minimum 3 seats) (TablePlus pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: macOS, Windows, Linux. Proprietary.

Best for: Paying for a quick native SQL client.

Worth knowing: Basic is $99 and Standard is $129 one-time per license. Free version is a trial limited to 2 open tabs, 2 windows and 2 advanced filters, so no free plan is counted.

Adminer

Compared with DataGrip: Single PHP file for browser-based database access, under Apache-2.0 or GPL-2.0. Nothing like DataGrip's IDE features, but zero install for quick fixes.

Price: Free (Open source under Apache-2.0 or GPL-2.0; no paid plan) (Adminer pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web (PHP). Apache-2.0 or GPL-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 7.9k GitHub stars · latest release v6.2.0 (Oct 23, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Quick edits on a remote database.

Worth knowing: Single PHP file for web database administration.

DbVisualizer

Compared with DataGrip: Has a $0 Free edition and Pro from $199 in year 1, then $89 from year 2. Unlike DataGrip's non-commercial-only free licence, it is not limited to non-commercial use.

Price: Free (DbVisualizer Free at $0 with the standard feature set; Pro features unlock with a license key); paid from $199 per user, first year (Pro with 60-day support; $89 from year 2) (DbVisualizer pricing, checked 2026-10-25).
