Verdict:Apache Airflow is the default scheduler for Python data pipelines, and it is free under Apache-2.0, but you run the scheduler, workers and database yourself. Leave it when most of your pipeline time goes to keeping the scheduler healthy, or when your team wants assets rather than tasks. Dagster is the closest conceptual switch: it is Apache-2.0 and models data assets, which fits warehouse-heavy teams, though migrating DAGs takes real effort. Prefect is the lighter Python option, with decorators rather than DAG files. Argo Workflows suits a team already on Kubernetes that wants each step as a pod, but it requires a cluster Airflow does not. Temporal is a different class of tool: durable execution for long-running business processes, not scheduled ETL, so pick it only if your workflows wait on humans or outside systems for hours. Kestra is a YAML-first option for mixed-language pipelines under Apache-2.0. Airflow still wins on its provider ecosystem and community size. The trade-off is that the alternatives are often easier to start but smaller in integrations, so count the operators you use before you commit.

Apache Airflow today: Free (Apache Airflow pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
The Airflow README says it works best with workflows that are mostly static and slowly changing, that it is not a streaming solution, and that tasks should not pass large amounts of data to one another. Native Windows is not supported, so teams need WSL2 or Linux containers, and production should run on Linux. You also run the scheduler, workers and a database yourself, and Airflow 2 reached end of life on April 22, 2026, which pushes remaining users onto version 3.
Compared with Apache Airflow: Apache-2.0 asset-based orchestrator. Models data assets instead of tasks, which suits data platforms; it needs a rewrite of existing Airflow DAGs.
Price: Free (Dagster pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Python. Apache-2.0 (open source).
Project activity: 16.3k GitHub stars · latest release 1.13.27 (Oct 26, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Data platforms that think in assets.
Worth knowing: Asset-based data orchestrator. Free under Apache-2.0; the asset graph and tests are its main difference from task-based DAGs.
Compared with Apache Airflow: Apache-2.0 Python-first engine that uses decorators instead of DAG files. Quicker to start with than Airflow, though its open-source UI is simpler for large deployments.
Price: Free (Prefect pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Platforms and license: Python. Apache-2.0 (open source).
Project activity: 24.1k GitHub stars · latest release 3.9.0 (Oct 21, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Python teams that want less boilerplate.
Worth knowing: Python-first workflow engine with decorators instead of DAG files. Apache-2.0 licensed open-source core.
Compared with Apache Airflow: Apache-2.0 engine that runs each step as a Kubernetes pod. Fits container-native shops; you must run a Kubernetes cluster, which Airflow does not require.
Price: Free (Argo Workflows pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Kubernetes. Apache-2.0 (open source).
Project activity: 17.1k GitHub stars · latest release v4.1.6 (Oct 22, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Kubernetes-native batch jobs.
Worth knowing: Runs each workflow step as a Kubernetes pod. Apache-2.0; needs a Kubernetes cluster.
Compared with Apache Airflow: MIT-licensed durable execution engine for long-running code. Better for stateful business processes than for scheduled data pipelines, and the managed Temporal Cloud is separate.
Price: Free (Temporal pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Platforms and license: Self-hosted (Linux), Temporal Cloud. MIT (open source).
Project activity: 24k GitHub stars · latest release v1.32.1 (Oct 8, 2026) · last commit Oct 28, 2026
Best for: Long-running business workflows.
Worth knowing: Durable execution engine for long-running code paths. MIT licensed server; the managed Temporal Cloud is separate.
Compared with Apache Airflow: Apache-2.0 declarative YAML orchestrator with a free open-source edition. Quick to set up for mixed-language pipelines, though its Cloud and Enterprise prices are usage-based or quote-based.
Price: Free (Kestra Open Source, free) (Kestra pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Platforms and license: Self-hosted. Apache-2.0 (open source).
Project activity: 30k GitHub stars · latest release v2.0.7 (Oct 20, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Mixed-language pipelines defined in YAML.
Compared with Apache Airflow: Managed ELT service, not a code-first orchestrator. A free plan covers 500,000 monthly active rows; paid plans are usage-based with no fixed list price. You skip running Airflow but give up custom DAG logic.
Price: Free (Free plan: 500,000 monthly active rows for connections, 3,500 MAR for activations, 5,000 model runs a month) (Fivetran pricing, checked 2026-10-25).
