Verdict:Leave Netlify when your bill tracks bandwidth and build credits more than the work you deliver. Netlify's free plan gives 300 credits a month and charges 20 credits per GB of bandwidth, so a busy static site can use its allowance quickly. Cloudflare suits teams that already manage DNS there, because its free plan includes CDN, universal SSL and DNS in one account. Vercel's Hobby plan includes 100 GB of Fast Data Transfer per month, and its Pro plan costs $20 a month, which makes it the closest drop-in for framework-heavy projects. Render gives free web services 750 instance hours a month, but its free services spin down after 15 minutes idle, so cold starts will show on live pages. Firebase Hosting sits inside a free tier with authentication and databases, which helps if you need more than static files. Fly.io is paid only, starting at $2.19 a month, and suits running containers close to users rather than static sites. Choose Cloudflare for the cheapest static hosting, Vercel when the framework matters, and Firebase when you need a backend too. The trade-off is that moving off Netlify means rewriting redirects, headers and form handling, which each host implements differently. Test a preview deployment with your real build before you change DNS, and keep the old site live until the new one matches.

Good fit if

  • You want the cheapest static hosting (Cloudflare is the pick)
  • Your project is framework-heavy and deploys from git (Vercel is the pick)
  • You need a backend that spins up on demand (Render is the pick)
  • You need static hosting plus auth and a database (Firebase is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Netlify features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Netlify today: Free (Free plan: 300 credits per month); paid from $9 per month (Personal, 1,000 credits) (Netlify pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for Netlify alternatives

Netlify bills by credits. Free includes 300 credits a month, Personal is $9 for 1,000 and Pro is $20 for 3,000 with unlimited members. Usage draws them down: a production deploy costs 15 credits, bandwidth 20 credits per GB and compute 10 per GB-hour. Extra credits are sold in packs, 500 for $5 on Personal and 1,500 for $10 on Pro, so traffic spikes and frequent deploys turn straight into cost. The free plan is a 300-credit allowance rather than unlimited usage.

Cloudflare

Compared with Netlify: Free plan includes DNS, unmetered DDoS protection, CDN and universal SSL. Against Netlify's 300 credits a month you get a larger static allowance, but you lose Netlify's built-in form and split-test tooling.

Price: Free (Free plan: DNS, unmetered DDoS protection, CDN, universal SSL, WAF managed ruleset); paid from $20 per month, billed annually (Pro; $25 billed monthly) (Cloudflare pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web. Proprietary.

Best for: Static sites with DNS in one account.

Worth knowing: Business plan is $200/month billed annually ($250 monthly). Free plan has community support only and no uptime SLA.

Vercel

Compared with Netlify: Hobby plan includes 100 GB of Fast Data Transfer per month and Pro is $20 a month. Against Netlify you get a similar git deploy flow, but its pricing is per member, so teams outgrow Hobby sooner.

Price: Free (Hobby: 100 GB Fast Data Transfer, 1M CDN requests, 1M function invocations per month); paid from $20 per month (Pro, plus $20 per developer seat) (Vercel pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web. Proprietary.

Best for: Next.js and framework-heavy projects.

Render

Compared with Netlify: Free web services get 750 instance hours a month, but they spin down after 15 minutes idle. Against Netlify, which serves static files well, Render is for backends, and cold starts hurt live pages.

Price: Free (Free web services: 750 instance hours per month, spin down after 15 minutes idle, no persistent disk; free Postgres is 1 GB and expires after 30 days) (Render pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Cloud. Proprietary.

Best for: Backends and databases on a free start.

Firebase

Compared with Netlify: Free Spark tier covers hosting alongside auth and databases. Against Netlify's static focus, Firebase brings Google's backend services, so you gain auth and data but learn a larger platform.

Price: Free (Spark no-cost plan: Firestore 1 GiB stored, Auth 50K monthly active users, Hosting 10 GB) (Firebase pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Cloud. Proprietary.

Best for: Static sites that also need a backend.

Worth knowing: Blaze is pay as you go with no flat monthly fee; eligible users may get $300 free credit. Firestore is a document database, not Postgres.

Fly.io

Compared with Netlify: No free plan; paid from $2.19 a month per the docs. Against Netlify's managed static hosting, Fly runs containers close to users, which suits servers rather than static sites.

Price: Paid from $2.19 per month for a shared-cpu-1x 256MB machine, 30 days continuous, usage-based (Fly.io pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, Cloud. Proprietary.

Best for: Containerised apps near users.

Worth knowing: New organizations have no free tier or monthly allowance. New accounts get a trial of up to 2 hours of machine runtime or 7 days. Outbound data from $0.02/GB.

Heroku

Compared with Netlify: No free tier on the pricing page; Eco dynos start at $5 a month and the cheapest Postgres (Essential-0) is also $5 a month. Suits long-running apps with a database rather than Netlify's credit-metered static hosting.

Price: Paid from $5 per month (Eco dyno, 0.5 GB RAM) (Heroku pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Northflank

Compared with Netlify: Free Sandbox covers 2 services, 2 jobs and 1 database. Pay as you go starts at $0.01667 per vCPU-hour with unlimited users and no per-seat fee, so cost follows compute use instead of credits.

Price: Free (Sandbox: 2 services, 2 jobs and 1 database, up to $20 a month of resources on Northflank Cloud); paid from $0.01667 per vCPU-hour, pay as you go (memory $0.00833 per GB-hour; nf-compute-50 is $12 a month) (Northflank pricing, checked 2026-10-25).

Which one to pick
