Verdict:Veeam's Community Edition is free but limited to 10 workloads and carries no technical support, and paid-tier prices are not published beyond saying Data Platform Essentials covers up to 50 workloads. If you have outgrown 10 workloads and do not want to pay, replace Veeam by the job you use it for. For image backups of a few Windows and Linux machines, UrBackup is the closest free option and restores bare metal from a USB stick. For files to cheap object storage, restic is fast and encrypted but has no GUI. Duplicati gives you that with a web interface. If your hosts run on Proxmox, Proxmox Backup Server is built for it, and its Community subscription is 560 EUR a year per server for the enterprise repository. Bacula suits mixed Unix estates where you want a catalog and agents. The trade-off is hypervisor support. Veeam talks directly to VMware and Hyper-V with application-aware processing and instant VM recovery, and none of the free tools match that on VMware. Stay with Veeam for production VMware or Hyper-V. Move if your estate is small, physical or Proxmox-based.
