Verdict:Leave cPanel if the price per server hurts: the cheapest Solo plan is $29.99 a month billed monthly or $27.46 billed annually, and cPanel's page lists no free plan, only a trial of unstated length. For a single VPS with a few sites, Hestia Control Panel is the nearest free replacement. It handles web, mail, DNS and databases and is GPL-3.0, but it installs only on fresh Debian or Ubuntu, so an AlmaLinux server means a rebuild. CloudPanel suits developers who run PHP next to Node.js or Python apps. CyberPanel fits if you already use OpenLiteSpeed. Webmin is a different animal: it administers the server, not customer accounts, so it will not replace cPanel for a reseller. Plesk is the option if you still want a paid panel; its entry edition is 12.04 EUR a month and it also runs on Windows. Coolify makes sense when you deploy apps, not websites with mailboxes. The trade-off is migration work. Moving sites off cPanel means re-creating accounts, DNS, mail and databases by hand, and none of the free panels reproduce cPanel's reseller tooling or its ecosystem of plugins. Stay on cPanel if you resell hosting to customers. Leave it for your own sites.

Not ideal if

  • You rely on cPanel features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

cPanel today: Paid from $27.46 per month, billed annually (Solo, Cloud/VPS) (cPanel pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for cPanel alternatives

cPanel is licensed per server: Solo is $27.46 a month billed annually for 1 account, Admin $32.96 for up to 5, Pro $49.46 for up to 30, and Premier $69.99 billed monthly for up to 100, with additional accounts at $0.49 each. The lower tiers run on Cloud or VPS servers only, and Metal or dedicated servers need Premier. Licences auto-renew on the purchase date, and cancelling means doing it before renewal.

Hestia Control Panel

Compared with cPanel: GPL-3.0 panel that manages web domains, mail, DNS and databases from one dashboard, with no license fee. You lose cPanel's RHEL-family support, since it targets Debian and Ubuntu only, but you drop a $27.46 a month plan.

Price: Free (free, no paid plans; donations accepted) (Hestia Control Panel pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Debian, Ubuntu, Self-hosted. GPL-3.0 (open source).

Project activity: 4.6k GitHub stars · latest release 1.10.5 (Sep 14, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Free panel on a fresh Debian or Ubuntu VPS.

Worth knowing: Manages web, DNS, mail and databases on a fresh Debian or Ubuntu server; no RHEL-family support.

CloudPanel

Compared with cPanel: Free panel for PHP, Node.js, static sites, reverse proxies and Python apps, on Ubuntu or Debian and on ARM as well as x86. It is lighter than cPanel and has no reseller layer or mail focus.

Price: Free (described as free) (CloudPanel pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Debian, Ubuntu, Self-hosted. Not stated.

Best for: Developers running several app types on one VPS.

Worth knowing: Runs PHP, Node.js, static sites, reverse proxies and Python apps; x86 and ARM.

Webmin

Compared with cPanel: BSD-3-Clause server administration with 116 standard modules. It manages the server itself rather than hosting accounts, so you lose cPanel's per-customer isolation and account model.

Price: Free (free, open source) (Webmin pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Linux, BSD, Self-hosted. BSD-3-Clause (open source).

Project activity: 6.1k GitHub stars · latest release 2.670 (Sep 21, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Admins who want server control, not customer accounts.

Worth knowing: Server-level admin, not a multi-account hosting panel; Virtualmin is the related hosting layer.

CyberPanel

Compared with cPanel: GPL-3.0 panel built on OpenLiteSpeed with FTP, PowerDNS, email, firewall and Docker management. You swap cPanel's Apache stack and polish for a free panel tuned to LiteSpeed-style hosting.

Price: Free (free, open source) (CyberPanel pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Linux, Self-hosted. GPL-3.0 (open source).

Project activity: 2k GitHub stars · latest release v1.9.1 (Oct 15, 2019) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Free panel with a LiteSpeed web server.

Worth knowing: Built around OpenLiteSpeed; includes FTP, PowerDNS, email and Docker management.

Plesk

Compared with cPanel: Paid like cPanel but lists a lower entry price of 12.04 EUR a month (Web Admin Edition, VPS) with a two-week trial and no card. It runs on Linux and Windows, which cPanel does not.

Price: Paid from EUR 12.04 per month (Web Admin Edition, VPS) (Plesk pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Linux, Windows. Proprietary.

Best for: Staying with a commercial panel at a lower price.

Worth knowing: Prices exclude VAT; 2-week free trial, no card required.

Coolify

Compared with cPanel: Self-hosted PaaS under Apache-2.0 that deploys apps over SSH with Docker, Compose or Nixpacks. It replaces cPanel for app hosting, but has no mailbox or classic shared-hosting account tooling.

Price: Free (self-hosted is free forever); paid from $5 per month, Coolify Cloud base (includes 2 servers) (Coolify pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted, Coolify Cloud. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 65.1k GitHub stars · latest release v4.5.1 (Oct 27, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Worth knowing: Deploys over SSH using Docker, Compose or Nixpacks.
