Verdict:Leave Substack when you want to own the subscriber list, use your own domain, or avoid a revenue cut on paid subscriptions. Buttondown is the minimal option: free for your first 100 subscribers, then paid on its pricing page, with a simple email editor. beehiiv has a free plan for up to 2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends, and its Lite plan is $49 a month billed yearly for up to 1,000 subscribers. Ghost is a publishing platform: you can self-host its open-source code, or use Ghost(Pro) Starter from $18 a month billed yearly. Kit offers a free plan up to 10,000 subscribers and paid from $33 a month. MailerLite has a free plan for 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month, and paid from $12 a month. Choose beehiiv or Kit if the list is the asset and you want growth tools on a free start, Ghost if you want a full site with memberships, and Buttondown when you want plain email. The trade-off is discovery. Substack's built-in reader network brings readers who would never find you otherwise, and every replacement loses that. Expect slower early growth, and export the list before you cancel a paid Substack plan.

Substack today: Free (Free to publish; Substack takes 10% of paid subscription revenue and writers also bear credit card fees) (Substack pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Substack says writers keep 90% of their revenue minus credit card fees, so it keeps about 10% of paid subscription revenue and the card fees come out of your share. The page does not give the card fee rate. The fee scales with your success: a newsletter earning $5,000 a month would pay about $500 to the platform before card fees, which is why writers with a paying audience compare flat-fee tools.
Compared with Substack: Free for your first 100 subscribers, then paid per the pricing page. Against Substack you lose its built-in reader network and discovery, but you keep the list and pay no revenue cut.
