Verdict:Sora is being wound down, which changes the question from ”should I switch” to ”where do I go”. OpenAI said on March 24, 2026 that it is discontinuing Sora in the consumer app and API; we found no shutdown date, so export anything you want to keep now. The replacements split into two groups. Hosted tools behave like Sora did: Runway has 125 free one-time credits and a Standard plan at $12 a month billed annually, Pika's Starter is $8 a month billed annually with no monthly free credits, and Luma's Plus is $25 a month billed yearly with no free plan. Open-source models cost nothing per clip but need your own GPU and some patience. Wan 2.1 is Apache 2.0, and its smallest text-to-video model needs about 8.19GB of VRAM. LTX-Video's repository is Apache 2.0 too, but some checkpoints carry OpenRAIL-M, so read the license on the exact model before using output commercially. The trade-off is convenience against cost: hosted tools give quick results with credits that run out, while local models give unlimited clips after a setup that can take an evening. Choose Runway to test quickly without paying, a local model if you have the hardware, and a paid plan only after a free test shows the style you want. We did not compare output quality, so run your own prompts first.

Why people look for Sora alternatives

OpenAI notified developers on March 24, 2026 that the Videos API and every sora-2 and sora-2-pro model snapshot would be removed from the API on September 24, 2026, and its deprecations page lists no recommended replacement for any of them. That date has passed, so any workflow still built on the Videos API needs a different video model or provider, and the prompts and settings have to be rebuilt there.
