Open-source website builders are not one product type, so match the tool to who will edit the site. WordPress is the mainstream choice: a GPL CMS with themes and plugins that non-technical people can update, at the cost of regular security updates and a hosting bill. Ghost is narrower and faster for newsletters and publishing, with memberships built in. Grav stores content in flat files rather than a database, which makes backups and hosting simple. Static-site generators like Hugo build plain HTML you can host almost anywhere for little, but editing means Markdown files; Publii wraps that approach in a desktop app with a visual editor. Webstudio offers a Webflow-style design canvas you can self-host, and GrapesJS is a library developers embed to give users a drag-and-drop page editor inside their own product. The trade-off is editing comfort against running cost and risk: dynamic CMS platforms are easy for editors but need updates, while static sites are secure and cheap but ask more of whoever publishes. Check how forms, search and ecommerce will work before choosing, because those are the features static tools handle through third parties.
