Good fit if

  • You record live instruments and mix them (Ardour is the pick)
  • You make beats and electronic tracks (LMMS is the pick)
  • You compose and want to see notation (Rosegarden is the pick)
  • You want a plain Linux audio and MIDI sequencer (Qtractor is the pick)
  • You want to sketch melodies before a full session (Helio is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You cannot host, patch and back up a server yourself and want a vendor to run it

A digital audio workstation is where you record, sequence and mix a whole song, and open-source options are better than people expect. The split is between audio-first and MIDI-first tools. Ardour is the serious audio recorder and mixer, and the one most often compared to commercial studios. LMMS is closer to FL Studio: a pattern-based beat maker with built-in instruments, good if you want to make electronic music without buying plugins. Qtractor, Rosegarden and MusE are Linux sequencers with MIDI and audio tracks, with Rosegarden also offering notation editing. Helio is a lighter sequencer for sketching ideas. Before choosing, decide your platform, because several of these are Linux-only according to their own sites, while Ardour and LMMS also cover Windows and macOS. Then decide whether you are tracking real instruments or programming sounds. The common trap is Ardour pricing: the source code is free, but the project sells the pre-built installers, so check the download page for the current price and budget for that or compile it yourself. None of these ship a large commercial sample library, so plan to add free plugins or sounds. If you are replacing Ableton, FL Studio or Logic, expect a rougher interface and fewer polished workflows in exchange for no license fee and full control.
