Verdict:Ableton Live 12 sells as Intro at $99, Standard at $349 and Suite at $749 (or $31.21 a month rent-to-own for Suite), and a free trial is linked from the shop. The price gap between Intro and the full set of instruments is the main reason people compare. Free options exist, but none copy Live's clip-launching performance view. LMMS is free and open source and fits beat-making. Ardour is GPL, strong on recording and mixing, and pre-built versions are paid. GarageBand is free and the easiest first step on Apple hardware; BandLab runs free in a browser with 16 Studio tracks and ads. If you want a real full DAW for little money, REAPER's $60 discounted licence after a 60-day evaluation is the standout, and it is very customisable but built around a linear timeline. FL Studio starts at $99 one-time and is built around patterns, so the workflow differs. The real trade-off is performance: if you play Live on stage with clips and scenes, none of these replace that. For studio-style production on a budget, REAPER or a free tool will do.

  • You are on a Mac or iPad and starting out (GarageBand is the pick)
  • You want a cheap full DAW (REAPER is the pick)
  • You record and mix on open source software (Ardour is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Ableton Live features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Ableton Live today: Paid from $99 per one-time (Intro; Standard $349, Suite $749 or $31.21 a month rent-to-own) (Ableton Live pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Why people look for Ableton Live alternatives

Live is sold per edition. Intro at $99 is limited to 16 audio and MIDI tracks and 8 instruments, while Standard at $349 and Suite at $749 remove the track limit. Upgrade prices only appear after logging in. A license covers one user on two computers and Live needs an internet connection to authorize. Suite rent-to-own at $31.21 a month allows only 3 days offline between checks before saving and exporting are disabled.

Ardour

Compared with Ableton Live: GPL recording and mixing workstation; source is free to build and pre-built versions are paid. It is stronger on tracking and mixing than on Live's clip-based performance, and runs on Linux, macOS and Windows.

Price: Free (Source code is free to build; pre-built versions are paid, and the download page shows no price) (Ardour pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Linux, macOS, Windows. GPL-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 5.4k GitHub stars · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Open source recording and mixing.

LMMS

Compared with Ableton Live: Free, open source, community project for making beats and synth parts. Closer to a pattern-based tool than Live; you lose live performance and clip launching, and pay nothing.

Price: Free (Described on lmms.io as a 100% free, open source, community-driven project; no paid version listed) (LMMS pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Linux, Windows, macOS. GPL-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 10.6k GitHub stars · latest release v1.2.2 (Jul 4, 2020) · last commit Oct 25, 2026

Best for: Free beat making.

Worth knowing: Pattern-based beat maker and synth tool, closer to FL Studio than to a linear recording editor.

GarageBand

Compared with Ableton Live: Free on iPhone and iPad per the App Store, and on Mac. You lose Live's depth and Windows support, and gain a simple start with Apple's own sounds and loops.

Price: Free (Free in the App Store listing for iPhone and iPad; Mac page states no price) (GarageBand pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: macOS, iPhone, iPad. Proprietary.

Best for: A free start on Apple devices.

BandLab

Compared with Ableton Live: Free plan with 16 Studio tracks and ads, in the browser and on iOS and Android. Pro is $99 for the first year. Browser based, so you lose Live's local performance tools.

Price: Free (Free: 16 Studio tracks, 10 FX chain effects, 3 SplitterAI splits a day, ads shown); paid from $99 per year, Pro (first year; page says $149 after the first year). Max $199 first year (BandLab pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, iOS, Android. Proprietary.

Best for: Browser-based music making.

REAPER

Compared with Ableton Live: 60-day full evaluation, then a $60 discounted licence. Cheaper than Live Intro-to-Standard tiers and very customisable, but it is a linear recorder rather than a clip-launching performance tool.

Price: Paid from $60 per discounted license, one-time (commercial license is $225) (REAPER pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Proprietary.

Best for: A low-cost full DAW.

FL Studio

Compared with Ableton Live: From $99 one-time with free lifetime updates per its page; a free trial exists. Same price as Live Intro but pattern-based, so a different workflow, not a copy of Live's.

Price: Paid from $99 per one-time, lowest edition (page title says 'From $99'); free lifetime updates per the page (FL Studio pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS. Proprietary.

Best for: Pattern-based production.

Logic Pro

Compared with Ableton Live: Mac-only, needing macOS 15.6 and Apple silicon. Sold in Apple Creator Studio at $12.99 a month or as a $199.99 one-time Mac purchase, with a 30-day trial, so it undercuts Live Standard at $349 but has no Windows version.

Price: Paid from $12.99 per month, Apple Creator Studio subscription ($129 a year); Logic Pro for Mac is also $199.99 one-time (Logic Pro pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
