Verdict:Logic Pro is a Mac and iPad program priced at $199.99 one time, or $12.99 a month through Apple Creator Studio with a 30-day trial. It needs macOS 15.6 and an Apple silicon Mac, so older Macs and non-Mac users are locked out. GarageBand is the sensible first move for anyone on Apple hardware: free in the App Store listing, similar interface, and a path to open the same projects in Logic later. Reaper is the best value outside the Apple world, with a 60-day evaluation and a discounted license listed at $60, and it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Ardour is the open-source pick if you mostly record and mix; its source is free to build, while its prebuilt downloads are paid. LMMS covers beat-making without a cost but is weaker for recording live instruments. BandLab gives browser access and collaboration at no cost with a 16-track limit and ads. The trade-off is content. Logic bundles instruments, loops and Drummer-style tools that none of the free options match, so you may end up adding third-party plugins. Stay on Logic if you already own it and use its instruments. Leave for Reaper or Ardour when you need to leave Apple, or for GarageBand when you only need a free starter.

Not ideal if

  • You rely on Logic Pro features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

Logic Pro today: Paid from $12.99 per month, Apple Creator Studio subscription ($129 a year); Logic Pro for Mac is also $199.99 one-time (Logic Pro pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for Logic Pro alternatives

Logic Pro runs only on Apple hardware: macOS 15.6 or later on an Apple silicon Mac, or iPadOS 26 or later on an iPad with an A12 Bionic chip or newer. Windows and Linux users cannot run it. Buying it outright is a $199.99 one-time purchase that covers the Mac only; the iPad version comes only through the Apple Creator Studio subscription at $12.99 per month or $129 per year.

GarageBand

Compared with Logic Pro: Free in the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and the natural step down from Logic on a Mac. You lose Logic's advanced mixing and plugins, but project files carry across Apple devices.

Price: Free (Free in the App Store listing for iPhone and iPad; Mac page states no price) (GarageBand pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: macOS, iPhone, iPad. Proprietary.

Best for: Free Apple-native recording.

Ardour

Compared with Logic Pro: GPL-2.0 DAW on Linux, macOS and Windows. Free to build from source, and ready-made builds are paid. Better for recording and mixing than for Logic's built-in instruments and loops.

Price: Free (Source code is free to build; pre-built versions are paid, and the download page shows no price) (Ardour pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Linux, macOS, Windows. GPL-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 5.4k GitHub stars · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Open-source mixing and recording.

REAPER

Compared with Logic Pro: 60-day evaluation with full functionality, then a discounted license listed at $60. Cheaper than Logic's $199.99 one-time price, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Price: Paid from $60 per discounted license, one-time (commercial license is $225) (REAPER pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. Proprietary.

Best for: Low-cost full DAW.

LMMS

Compared with Logic Pro: Open-source and free on Linux, Windows and macOS, aimed at making beats and electronic music. It lacks Logic's audio recording depth and polished instrument library.

Price: Free (Described on lmms.io as a 100% free, open source, community-driven project; no paid version listed) (LMMS pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Linux, Windows, macOS. GPL-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 10.6k GitHub stars · latest release v1.2.2 (Jul 4, 2020) · last commit Oct 25, 2026

Best for: Free pattern-based music making.

Worth knowing: Pattern-based beat maker and synth tool, closer to FL Studio than to a linear recording editor.

BandLab

Compared with Logic Pro: Free browser and mobile studio with 16 Studio tracks and ads shown. Lightweight compared with Logic, and projects stay inside BandLab's tools.

Price: Free (Free: 16 Studio tracks, 10 FX chain effects, 3 SplitterAI splits a day, ads shown); paid from $99 per year, Pro (first year; page says $149 after the first year). Max $199 first year (BandLab pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Web, iOS, Android. Proprietary.

Best for: Free collaboration in the browser.

Ableton Live

Compared with Logic Pro: Windows and macOS DAW sold as a one-time purchase: Intro $99, Standard $349, Suite $749. Logic Pro is $199.99 and Mac-only, so Live costs more at higher tiers but is the option if you work on Windows.

Price: Paid from $99 per one-time (Intro; Standard $349, Suite $749 or $31.21 a month rent-to-own) (Ableton Live pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

FL Studio

Compared with Logic Pro: Windows and macOS DAW listed from $99 one-time with free lifetime updates, against Logic Pro's $199.99 Mac purchase. You lose Logic's bundled Apple sound library and iPad version but gain Windows support.

Price: Paid from $99 per one-time, lowest edition (page title says 'From $99'); free lifetime updates per the page (FL Studio pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
