Verdict:Leave Onshape when its free plan's rules or the paid price stop fitting your work. The free plan is for non-commercial use only, and every document is public, so client or commercial parts cannot stay private on it. The Standard plan is listed at USD 1,500 per user per year, billed annually. FreeCAD is the usual first replacement: it is free under LGPL-2.1, runs on your own computer instead of a browser, and has no public-document rule, so it suits hobby and small-shop work with private files. LibreCAD is also free under GPL-2.0, but it draws in 2D only, so use it for flat plans and not solid parts. Blender is free for commercial work, though it models meshes and renders rather than dimensioned parametric parts. If your drawings already live in DWG, AutoCAD is the paid benchmark at $175 a month from the product page, while nanoCAD Free is non-commercial only and reads DWG up to 2013. The trade-off is sharing: Onshape runs in a browser where several people can open the same model, and desktop tools lose that. Keep Onshape if a team edits one model together and the public-document rule is acceptable.

Onshape today: Free (Free plan for non-commercial use; all documents are public); paid from $1500 per user/year, Standard, billed annually (Onshape pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Onshape's free plan is for non-commercial use only, and every document on it is public. Private documents, unlimited private storage and in-product support start at Standard, $1,500 per user per year. Simulation, rendering, CAM, release management and advanced PDM need Professional at $2,500 per user per year, while SSO and guest access sit on Enterprise at a custom quote.
Compared with Onshape: Free parametric CAD under LGPL-2.1, with no subscription and no rule that makes documents public. Against Onshape's free non-commercial plan it runs on your own computer, not in a browser, and you can keep client parts private.
Price: Free (Free, no sign-up) (FreeCAD pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. LGPL-2.1 (open source).
Project activity: 34.9k GitHub stars · latest release 1.1.4 (Sep 28, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: Private or commercial parts at no cost.
Worth knowing: Mainly parametric 3D; 2D drafting is not its strength.
Compared with Onshape: Free GPL-2.0 drafting tool with no trial or subscription. It draws in 2D only, so it replaces Onshape's 3D parts for flat plans and layouts but not for solid models.
Price: Free (Free, no trial or subscription) (LibreCAD pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. GPL-2.0 (open source).
Project activity: 6.5k GitHub stars · latest release v2.2.1.6 (Oct 17, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026
Best for: 2D drawings and layouts.
Worth knowing: 2D only.
Compared with Onshape: Free for any purpose under GPL-3.0 or later, including commercial work. It is a mesh modelling and rendering tool, not a dimensioned parametric CAD kernel like Onshape, so it suits visuals more than machined parts.
Price: Free (Free for any purpose, including commercial work) (Blender pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows, macOS, Linux. GPL-3.0-or-later (open source).
Best for: Visualisation and rendering.
Worth knowing: Texture painting and baking are built in, with node-based shading; no layer stack with smart materials like Painter.
Compared with Onshape: nanoCAD Free v5 is for non-commercial use only and opens DWG files up to 2013. Compared with Onshape's free plan it is also limited, and its paid platform is listed at $289 a year.
Price: Free (nanoCAD Free v5: non-commercial use only, DWG up to 2013); paid from $289 per year, nanoCAD 26 Platform (nanoCAD pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Windows. Proprietary.
Best for: Hobby DWG files on a non-commercial budget.
Compared with Onshape: The paid DWG drafting standard, shown from $175 a month on the Autodesk product page. Unlike Onshape's free non-commercial tier you pay from the start, but you keep your files private and work with DWG.
Price: Paid from $175 per month, shown as Starting at on the product page (AutoCAD pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
Platforms and license: Desktop, Web, Mobile. Proprietary.
Best for: Teams that already exchange DWG drawings.
Compared with Onshape: Standard subscription is $2,820 a year for a single user, against Onshape Standard at $1,500 per user per year. A desktop CAD package with no free plan, and it lists Windows only.
Price: Paid from $2820 per year (Standard, single-user subscription, excluding taxes) (SOLIDWORKS pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
Compared with Onshape: Go plan is $10.75 per user per month billed annually, far below Onshape's $1,500 a year. Only SketchUp for Schools is free, and it needs an education account.
Price: Paid from $10.75 per user/month, billed annually (Go plan) (SketchUp pricing, checked 2026-10-23).
