Verdict:LangChain is the default Python and JavaScript framework for LLM apps, and its size is its strength and its weakness: abstractions shift between versions, and many integrations are thin. Leave it when your app is one retrieval flow or one agent loop and the framework adds more layers than it removes. LlamaIndex is the first step for document retrieval, since its indexing and query engines cover most RAG work under MIT. Haystack suits teams that want explicit pipeline graphs they can read and test, under Apache-2.0. Dify and Flowise replace code with a visual builder, which speeds up prototypes but makes version control and testing harder; check Dify's multi-tenant and logo terms before you host it for customers. Semantic Kernel is the pick for C# and Java teams, because it is a native SDK under MIT rather than a Python port. LangChain's own hosted tools were not priced for this page, so cost is not part of this comparison. The trade-off is that a leaner framework means you write more glue code yourself, which pays off only when your flows are stable.

Good fit if

  • Document question answering with a retrieval focus (LlamaIndex is the pick)
  • Production search pipelines you need to test (Haystack is the pick)
  • Non-developers building LLM apps with a visual tool (Dify is the pick)
  • Quick visual prototype of an LLM flow (Flowise is the pick)
  • Backend team on .NET or Java (Semantic Kernel is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on LangChain features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

LangChain today: Free (Open-source framework is free; hosted LangSmith pricing was not read) (LangChain pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for LangChain alternatives

The LangChain framework is free under the MIT licence, so costs show up in its hosted side. LangSmith's free Developer plan has one seat and up to 5k base traces a month, then pay-as-you-go. Plus is $39 per seat a month with 10k base traces, and deployments are metered in LSUs at $1 each, for example 0.0675 LSU per vCPU-hour of runtime compute. Teams only using the framework avoid these charges.

LlamaIndex

Compared with LangChain: MIT-licensed framework focused on indexing and retrieval over your own documents. Narrower than LangChain's agent and chain tooling, but simpler when retrieval is the whole product.

Price: Free (LlamaIndex pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Python, TypeScript. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 52.7k GitHub stars · latest release v0.14.25 (Sep 21, 2026) · last commit Oct 26, 2026

Best for: RAG apps built around document retrieval.

Worth knowing: Framework focused on indexing and retrieval over your own documents. MIT licensed.

Haystack

Compared with LangChain: Apache-2.0 pipeline framework for search and LLM apps, Python only. Explicit pipelines make the flow easier to debug than LangChain's chains, with a smaller integration list.

Price: Free (Haystack pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Python. Apache-2.0 (open source).

Project activity: 26.9k GitHub stars · latest release v3.4.1 (Oct 21, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: Production search and RAG pipelines.

Worth knowing: Pipeline-based framework for search and LLM apps, Apache-2.0 licensed. Python only.

Dify

Compared with LangChain: Visual LLM app builder under a modified Apache-2.0 license. No code for many flows, but multi-tenant hosting and console logo changes need written permission.

Price: Free (Dify pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted (Docker), Cloud. Modified Apache-2.0: multi-tenant hosting and logo restrictions apply.

Best for: Teams building apps without much code.

Worth knowing: Visual builder for LLM apps. The license is Apache-2.0 with extra conditions: no multi-tenant hosting without written permission, and the console logo cannot be removed.

Flowise

Compared with LangChain: Apache-2.0 node-based builder for LLM flows, with enterprise code under a commercial license. Quicker prototyping than LangChain code, though you lose fine-grained control in Python.

Price: Free (Flowise pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Platforms and license: Self-hosted (Node.js, Docker). Apache-2.0; enterprise code under a commercial license (open source).

Project activity: 55.5k GitHub stars · latest release flowise@3.1.4 (Jul 29, 2026) · Archived on GitHub

Best for: Visual prototyping for LLM flows.

Worth knowing: Node-based visual builder for LLM flows. Free under Apache-2.0 for the core; enterprise directories are under a separate commercial license.

Semantic Kernel

Compared with LangChain: MIT-licensed SDK from Microsoft with C#, Python and Java versions. Strongest choice for .NET and Java shops; the Python port is less mature than LangChain's ecosystem.

Price: Free (Semantic Kernel pricing, checked 2026-10-23).

Platforms and license: C#, Python, Java. MIT (open source).

Project activity: 28.7k GitHub stars · latest release dotnet-1.81.0 (Oct 6, 2026) · last commit Oct 27, 2026

Best for: C#, .NET and Java backends.

Worth knowing: Microsoft SDK for adding LLM skills and planners to apps. MIT licensed; language choice is wider than LangChain's Python and JavaScript.

CrewAI

Compared with LangChain: MIT-licensed multi-agent framework with a hosted Basic plan of 50 workflow executions a month, and a custom Enterprise tier. Focused on role-based agent teams rather than LangChain's broad toolkit.

Price: Free (Hosted Basic plan: 50 workflow executions a month) (CrewAI pricing, checked 2026-10-25).

n8n

Compared with LangChain: Visual workflow builder under the Sustainable Use License, not OSI open source. Cloud Starter is 20 euros a month billed annually for 2.5K executions. Lower code than LangChain, but less control over agent logic.

Price: Free (Self-hosted Community Edition from GitHub under the Sustainable Use License; Cloud has a free trial); paid from EUR 20 per month, Cloud Starter billed annually, 2.5K executions (n8n pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Which one to pick

  • Production search pipelines you need to test: Haystack
  • Non-developers building LLM apps with a visual tool: Dify
  • Quick visual prototype of an LLM flow: Flowise
