Good fit if

  • You want no cap on traffic (Microsoft Clarity is the pick)
  • You already use product analytics (PostHog is the pick)
  • You must keep visitor data on your own servers (OpenReplay is the pick)
  • You run a small site with a few hundred monthly visitors (Mouseflow is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

A heatmap tool shows where visitors click, how far they scroll and where they hesitate on a page, and free versions are limited by sessions, pages or how long data is kept. Microsoft Clarity is the outlier because it advertises no traffic limits, so it is the safe place to start on a site with real traffic. Hotjar's free plan covers a good number of sessions per month and is the easiest to explain to a client. PostHog bundles heatmaps with product analytics and session recordings, which helps if you want one tool for the whole funnel, and it can be self-hosted. OpenReplay is an open-source session replay tool, so it fits teams that cannot send visitor data to a third party. Mouseflow and Plerdy offer small free tiers: Mouseflow stops at 500 sessions a month, and Plerdy caps heatmaps per day. The trade-off to remember is privacy. Heatmaps and recordings can capture form fields and personal data unless you configure masking, and in Europe they usually need consent under cookie rules. Start with one page, such as your pricing or landing page, run it for a week or two, and change one thing at a time. A heatmap on a page with 50 visits a day takes a long time to say anything useful.
