Good fit if

  • You make a few images a week and want zero setup (Adobe Firefly is the pick)
  • You need readable text in the image (Ideogram is the pick)
  • You have a GPU and want no daily limit (ComfyUI is the pick)
  • You want to inpaint and edit on a canvas (Invoke is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You need paid-tier features, uptime guarantees or support that these free plans leave out

Free AI image generators split into two camps, and which camp you pick decides how much you can make. Hosted apps such as Adobe Firefly, Adobe Express, Ideogram and Leonardo.Ai give you a daily or weekly allowance of generations and then ask you to pay, so they suit a few images a day for a post, a thumbnail or a mockup. The other camp is software you run yourself: Stable Diffusion models, ComfyUI and Invoke cost nothing and have no daily limit, but you need a reasonably capable graphics card and an afternoon to set them up. If you only need a few pictures, start with a hosted app and see whether the free allowance lasts through your week. If you generate dozens at a time, or you want control such as inpainting, custom models and repeatable settings, the local route removes the meter. Read the licence before you publish anything commercial. Ideogram's free credits are slow and capped, Stable Diffusion's Community License is free only below USD 1M annual revenue, and several hosted free tiers restrict commercial use. The seven tools below state their allowance or licence so you can see where the free ride ends.
