Verdict:Leave Algolia when your search bill grows with every query, or when you want to run the search engine yourself. Meilisearch is the closest match for site and app search. Its MIT-licensed community edition has no usage limits when self-hosted, and its cloud plan starts at $20 a month. Typesense is GPL-3.0 for the server and free to self-host, but its cloud price comes from a calculator with no starting figure on the page, so ask before committing. You trade Algolia's hosted API for a server you tune. OpenSearch is Apache-2.0, forked from Elasticsearch 7.10, and free with no usage limits, but it is heavier to run than Algolia and suits log analytics as well as search. Apache Solr is Apache-2.0 and mature. It fits when your team already runs Java services and wants full control over indexing, and it means more operations work than Algolia's hosted API. Elasticsearch offers a free Basic self-managed license, but its triple licensing and cloud costs, including about $99 a month for an example hosted Standard setup, need checking for a large deployment. Pick Meilisearch for a small product search you self-host, Typesense for self-hosting with a cloud option, and OpenSearch or Elasticsearch when search and log analytics share one cluster. Run your query count times traffic before you move.

Algolia's pricing page lists Free, Grow, Grow Plus and Elevate. Free includes 10K search requests and 50K records a month, and usage above that needs a monthly plan.
