Verdict:Few teams need to leave SonarQube for cost reasons alone, because the Community Build is free under LGPL-3.0 and SonarQube Cloud is free up to 50k lines of code for private projects. The usual reasons are different: a Community Build that is missing features reserved for paid editions, a server you would rather not maintain, or a need for stronger security scanning than code-smell rules provide. If security is the goal, Semgrep is the best first look; the engine is open source, rules are readable and editable, and the hosted free tier allows 10 contributors. Snyk is better where dependencies and known vulnerabilities matter as much as your own code. Codacy and DeepSource are the closest hosted replacements for quality gates on pull requests, with free entry points and no server to patch. GitHub CodeQL suits public repositories already on GitHub. The trade-off to accept is rule coverage: SonarQube's maintainability metrics, duplication and technical debt reporting have no exact equivalent in the security-first tools, so you may need two tools, not one. Run the candidate on one repository next to SonarQube for a sprint and compare findings; false-positive rates differ more than feature lists suggest, and thresholds in your CI will need rewriting.

SonarQube today: Free (Community Build is free; SonarQube Cloud free up to 50k lines of code on private projects) (SonarQube pricing, checked 2026-10-22).
SonarQube's paid server editions, Developer, Enterprise and Data Center, are priced per instance per year based on lines of code, and the pricing page lists no figures. The Community Build is described as an open source edition for developers and small teams. SonarQube Cloud is free for private projects up to 50k lines, then the Team plan starts at $34 a month for up to 100k lines; only the largest branch of each project counts toward the limit. Enterprise is custom priced, with commercial support included starting at 5M lines. Costs therefore follow codebase size.
