Verdict:Leave WordPress if you are tired of plugin updates, security patches and a PHP and MySQL stack just to publish pages. WordPress itself is free under the GPL; the cost sits in hosting and maintenance, and its download page recommends PHP 8.3 or newer. Ghost is the natural pick for a blog or newsletter, because writing and memberships are built in instead of bolted on. Hugo suits documentation and brochure sites: it outputs plain files, so it is quick and cheap to host, though non-technical editors will find it awkward. Drupal and Joomla are the nearest like-for-like CMS options; Drupal is stronger on complex content and permissions, while Joomla bundles multilingual support. Strapi is different: it is a headless CMS, so you must build the front end yourself, and its Growth plan costs $45 per month if you outgrow the free community edition. The trade-off is ecosystem. WordPress has the most themes, plugins, freelancers and answers online, and switching means rebuilding templates and migrating content. Keep WordPress if non-developers edit the site daily. Pick Hugo for a developer-run site, Ghost for publishing, and Drupal only when your content model really needs it.

Good fit if

  • You run a blog or paid newsletter (Ghost is the pick)
  • A developer maintains the site and wants no database (Hugo is the pick)
  • You need complex content types and permissions (Drupal is the pick)
  • You want a content API behind your own front end (Strapi is the pick)

Not ideal if

  • You rely on WordPress (self-hosted) features or integrations that these tools do not replicate

WordPress (self-hosted) today: Free (Free to download; you pay for hosting. Recommended PHP 8.3+ and MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.11+) (WordPress (self-hosted) pricing, checked 2026-10-22).

Why people look for WordPress (self-hosted) alternatives

WordPress is free to download, but the download page puts the rest on you: your own hosting and a domain, plus a server that meets the recommended PHP 8.3 and MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.11 versions. Nothing is hosted for you unless you pick a host. For a small site, a portfolio or a blog, that server setup and upkeep is often more work than the site itself, which is why people look at hosted builders or lighter publishing tools.
